Cracked Up To Be

by Courtney Summers

St. Martin's Press | December 23, 2008 | Trade Paperback

Perfect Parker Fadley isn't so perfect anymore.  She's quit the cheerleading squad, she's dumped her perfect boyfriend, and she's failing school.  Her parents are on a constant suicide watch and her counselors think she's playing games…but what they don't know, the real reason for this whole mess, isn't something she can say out loud.  It isn't even something she can say to herself.  A horrible thing has happened and it just might be her fault.  If she can just remove herself from everybody--be totally alone--then everything will be okay...The problem is, nobody will let her.

It wasn't insanely good but it was a good read. Some of you may have only read it due to White Pine as have I, I probably wouldn't have picked it up in the store but I'm glad I read it because it wasn't too bad. A little cliche but good character development.

This story is full of suspense. You just need to know what happened at that party on that fatefull night. But Courtney Summers only lets you know a little bit at a time. The story is great with tons of high school Drama. In the end you fine out on twisted seceret about Parker.

Cracked Up To Be was one of the better teen novels I've read lately. It's a great novel from a debut author, one who's definitely made left an impression and has me interested enough to want to read her next book.

The novel was unique and fresh, and that's mainly due the main character, Parker. Parker isn't the typical nice girl...at least not anymore. Parker used to be the golden girl- the head cheerleader, popular, dated the hottest guy at school, straight A student- but now, she just wants to be left alone, alienating herself from other people, quitting the cheer team, and not bothering about her grades. Her parents and friends are all worried about her. What happened to make her change so much in such little time?

The funny thing about Parker is, despite her attitude problems and how she treats everyone around her so badly, you still can't help liking her and laughing at what she says and does. Parker may want to be left alone, but she's lucky she has some good people in her life that actually care... like Jake, the new guy at school who might actually get Parker to finally open up a bit.

You'll be wondering about what happened to Parker throughout but at least the author cleverly reveals information though flashbacks to the past... and in the end, everything just sort of falls into place.

Cracked Up To Be is one of the 2010's nominations for the White Pine Award.
