Cry Mercy

by Toni Andrews

M I R A Academic Press | June 1, 2009 | Mass Market Paperbound

I just want a normal life…even if I''m not entirely sure I''m human.

My name is Mercy Hollings and I''m a successful hypnotherapist in Balboa, California. The problem is, my good fortune is dependent on a dark secret. I can make people do whatever I want using telepathy, a power I call "the press." And that ability has hurt some people I never wanted to hurt, so I try to keep it under wraps.

I also try to keep people at a distance…at least, I used to. Recently a group of fearless characters broke through my self-imposed walls and became my friends: Sukey, my receptionist-turned-P.I.; Tino, a Chicano gang leader; Hilda, a wealthy society widow; Grant, a retired millionaire—and Sam, my sexy-as-hell ex-boyfriend.

But with friends comes drama. Tino has inadvertently led me into the dark world of gang violence, and Sukey has pushed me into searching for my biological parents, the only people who can finally tell me who—or what—I really am.

    Psychic Thriller Done Well

I've read all three of the Mercy series by Andrews, and I know I can count on her to deliver a strong, enjoyable thriller with the psychic twist that makes me keep coming back.

Mercy isn't sure what she is: she can 'press' people, an ability to tell them what to do that forces them into action. It's not as good a deal as it sounds, in her childhood, she told someone to "take a flying leap" and they jumped in front of a car. Coupled with her temper, this ability gives her more than enough trouble.

But now she has friends, and sometimes friends need help, and this is where Mercy is treading unfamiliar ground. In this third book, she ends up walking into the world of gangs, and there's a lot of character development and more of her mystery unfurls.

Enjoyable, I do suggest you start at the beginning of the series with "Beg for Mercy," but they're solid easy-read thrillers that fans of the paranormal will enjoy.

Sounds interesting, too bad you can't order the first two books! I don't get that.....a third book is due out and the first two in the series are 'temporarily unavailable'. Any ideas when they will be available (I ask because I seem to remember that you are a Chapters employee and figured you might be 'in the know'...especially since you seem to have been given an advance copy of this book to review)

I didn't get an advance copy, and the reason is actually the answer to your other question, too. The book is printed under the Mira publishing label, which is part of Harlequin Books (who do the monthly romance titles that are so famous and popular). Unfortunately, Mira has something similar in a sense, in that they have a shorter print run - which tends to lead to the titles not getting a second print run right away. It's sad, but it allows Mira to produce a higher diversity of titles, I would imagine, which lets them take chances on a wider variety of titles. At least, that's my thought. I'm certainly not going to speak for Mira, but I'm sure you could e-mail them. :)
