The Crystal Shard: The Icewind Dale Trilogy, Book One

by R.a. Salvatore

Wizards Of The Coast, Inc. | January 1, 1988 | Mass Market Paperbound

Akar Kessel, a weak-willed apprentice mage sets in motion events leading to the rediscovery of the magical device, the crystal shard. But is it merely an inanimate device . . . or is it capable of directing the defeat of Ten-Towns? Or have the barbarians already arranged for that themselves? Their brutal attack on the villages of Ten-Towns seals their fate, and that of the youn barbarian Wulfgar. Left for dead, Wulfgar is rescued by the dwarf, Bruenor, in exchange for five years of service . . . and friendship. With the help of the dark elf, Drizzt, Bruenor reshapes Wulfgar into a warrior with both brawn and brains. But is Wulfgar strong enough to reunite the barbarian tribes? Can an unorthodox dwarf and renegade dark elf persuade the people of Ten-Towns to put aside their petty differences in time to stave off the forces of the crystal shard?

The book that starts the journey down the trail of Drizzit and his friends Wulfgar, Regis, Bruenor and Catti-brie. The story is excellent and well worth the purchase price. Even if you don't buy it any true realms fan should read it.

Salvatore really knows how to write a thrilling novel. I have read all of his Forgotten Realms books and they are great. They are the kind of books that deserves an award. I only rated this book 5 stars because that all i could do. It should be about 50.

Drizzt Do'Urden instantly catches your heart as a character who is forced to the ends of the Earth in order to escape the hateful label that is his racial heritage. Who knew that this book would eventually be the begining of a tale that spans the course of 17 amazing novels?

R.A. Salvatore weaves a story that grabs you from the begining and never really lets you go. His ability to pull the reader into battles of epic proportions, while not losing the depth of his characters, is astounding. This book is a must read. But be warned that once you start... there won't be any stopping until you've read them all. :)

I think this book was excellent, it's about a Dark Elf who has abandon his own kind and is now living in the upper world. Then there is a war/fight for the better of Ice Wind Dale and he becomes friends with Bruenor the Dwarf. When everything is ok along comes a wizard named Akar Kessell and he posseses the Crystal Shard. He gathers Goblins, Orcs and Giants to fight an on going battle for Ice Wind Dale...

When I first picked up this book it was meant for my sister (also a fantasy fan) for her birthday. One day I was extremely bored so I started to read it. I could not put it down. I was an avid Dragonlance reader but this was my first Forgotten Realms and I must say, it got me hooked. Since then I have read and purchased almost all in the Drizzt series. If you like magic and battle, you will love this book. It includes dark plots with intrigue and daring rescues and battles. Lets just say this is a keeper.

I was first given this book at Christmas 5 years ago. After taking about 6 months to finally decide to read it, I was mesmerized by the intricacies of the plot and the subtle details that Salvatore added in. The descriptions of battle were amazing, I felt like I was there. I own all Salvatore's Forgotten Realms books and many others from that world. This author, and the world they are set in are highly reccommended. My favorite character in any book is now officially Drizzt Do'Urden, the dark elf.

An excellent book that tells a tale of 3 friends in an epic adventure. Dritz, the renegade drow elf, must deal with the racial hatred and mistrust, while saving Ten Towns from the barbarians and an evil artifact, the Crystal Shard.
