KING/DARK TOWER 01 GUNSLINGER

About the Author

Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine, on September 21, 1947, to Donald and Nellie Ruth King. King wrote his first short story before he was seven years old. As a teenager, he played on the football team and joined a rock band, but also had two of his short stories published. After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970, he married Tabitha Spruce, also a writer, in 1971, and began a career as a teacher. His spare time was spent in writing novels that were consistently rejected by publishers. King's first novel would never have been published if not for his wife. She removed the first few chapters from the garbage after King had thrown them away in frustration. Three months later, he received a $2,500 advance from Doubleday Publishing for the book that went on to sell a modest 13,000 hardcover copies. That book, Carrie, was about a girl with telekinetic powers who is tormented by bullies at school. She uses her power, in turn, to torment and eventually destroy her mean-spirited classmates. When United Artists released the film version in 1976, it was a critical and commercial success. The paperback version of the book, released after the movie, went on to sell more than two-and-a-half million copies. Many of King's other horror novels have been adapted into movies, including The Shining, Firestarter, Pet Semetary, Cujo, Misery, The Stand, and The Tommyknockers. Under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, King has written the books The Running Man, The Regulators, Thinner, The Long Walk, Roadwork, and Rage. Today, Stephen King is one of the world's most successful writers, with more than 100 million copies of his works in print. Many of his books have been translated into foreign languages, and he writes new books at a rate of about one per year. King and his wife have three children and live in the small town of Bangor, Maine, where many of his stories are set.

I found the Gunslinger, haunting. That even when you put the book down you can still feel its presence. You'll find yourself coming back for more.

With only an hour left to go before I finish this audiobook, I am starting to question the hype surrounding this series. I hate to be negative because I am a very big Stephen King fan... but, so far, its a lot slower-paced than I expected. It seems like there was only two or three exciting parts in the entire audiobook... and even then, they weren't so great. The gunslinger blows away a bunch of people, but its over so quickly you don't really have a chance to appreciate it. However, I will… read more

This book was absolutely great. At some parts slow but always good.As this is the first part of THE DARK TOWER series there is more to read.I am very anxious to read the rest of the series and I am sure it will be enjoyable. This book was great because of the characters way of life and mind and their backgrounds as well. The detail and story telling will make not want to put it down. Have a good adventure!

One of my all time favorites. The entire series is outstanding. Roland the Gunslinger is an exceptional character and his experiences are touching and exciting. Stephen King is NOT just a Horror Writer . He's a gifted artist. Best of the 20th Century.

    A Prologue to a Mind-Blowing Journey 5

This review is from: Dark Tower 01 Gunslinger (Trade Paperback)

This book is truly a piece of complete literary genius, exploring a strange alternate dimensional world which is different yet familiar in an eery way. Roland truly is a complex character whom is both a lone wolf anti-hero and a romantic knight on a quest for the good of all. This book can be explained as a 150-page prologue, wetting your appetite to the long quest ahead(chronicled in 3 more books, with 3 more yet to be written by King). Trust me once you read this book, you WILL go on to… read more

The Best Book I've Ever Read 5

This review is from: Dark Tower #1 Gunslinger (Trade Paperback)

After I finished this book I was just aching to continue on with the series (unfortunately I haven't found the next book at any of the stores i've visited) and there was suspense and I was happy with the quality of the writing. It didn't wander or just drone on and on. This is the first Steven King book i've read and I will surely continue on with the series after I find the next books! read more

    You'll Never Look Back 5

This series is the best Steven King has produced. If you're a fan of his work, and haven't read the Dark Tower series...get ready to be enthralled. It's King's very own Lord of the Rings and I truly believe it stands up to Tolkien. Every book in this series is very different and very great in it's own way. I envy those who have yet to read this first book. Unforgettable. A great journey awaits. read more

    Amazing book 5

This review is from: Dark Tower #1 Gunslinger Unabridged Compact Disc (Audio Book (CD))

It almost seems as if the book traps you in another mind-grasping story. The first book in the series of seven has definitely kept me reading on and on. It has about three hundred pages of a person called the gunslinger or roland that basically goes through towns and people to get to his first step of getting to the dark tower. I couldn't sleep eat or do anything else than read.I will also tell you that if you like lord of the rings (which you probably do) then this book is a must buy. It isn't… read more

Stephen King creates the world where the story takes place so well you feel as if you are actually there. the main character may seem from a different world on the surface but he is so human underneath. he is well rounded and utterly believable. all in all this is the best book I have read.

I got interested in the series after reading Hearts in Atlantis, and I wasn't disappointed. May seem like a slow read to start, but once you get into it, you will find it hard to put it down. Thinking of re-reading the series again :)

Classic Fantasy from the Master of Horror 5

This review is from: Dark Tower 01 Gunslinger (Trade Paperback)

Like "Star Wars" or "Lord of the Rings", King has created a fantasy milieu based on mythological archetypes that seem to reverberate in our collective memory. With Roland the gunslinger, he has created the quintessential hero on the ultimate quest. It has the tone of old pulp magazine stories and delights with magic, mystery, and yes, horror. And the ending can rival "2001:A Space Odyssey" for sheer mind-bending wierdness. This story seems to echo through many of King's other works - it… read more

The first chapter of possibly his most imaginitive series, The Gunslinger succeeded in captivating my mind. Its easy to class this book as either Fantasy or even Science-Fiction, yet in which category it truly belongs is still a Mystery.

    Hard to get into 3

My dad got me this book for Christmas one year ago and I'm just getting around to writing the review :) this book was good but hard to get into i found my mind wandered periodically while i read this book because it was bored. i mean for the first couple of chapters absolutely nothing happens he walks through a dessert the climax is meeting the kid and basically sentencing him to death. although this read is worth it only because the rest of the series is fantabulous

    Surprisingly Good 4

I am not a fan of Stephen King's writing (though I am a fan of the man), so I have purposefully stayed away from The Dark Tower series. King's books always seem to follow a simple pattern with me. The first third of the book I find myself excited, joyfully surfing the book on the wave of King's pure inventiveness (no matter how I feel about his books in the end, it is hard to deny that his crazy mind is full of interesting ideas). In the second third of the book, the wave invariably… read more

Not a bad start to a series..... 0

I have been a big King fan for many years but the only books of his I have never attempted are the Dark Tower series. So I've decided to finally read all of them, seeing as they are so popular. The Gunslinger is a good start to convincing me the series is worth it. There's so much to describe and I'm sure the series will only get more complicated but I'm glad to say that it is interesting and unique. The book is probably the most different from any other King book I have read, which I… read more
