GIFTED AND CURSED

Kaitlyn Fairchild has always felt like an outsider in her small hometown. Her haunting eyes and prophetic drawings have earned her a reputation as a witch. But Kait''s not a witch: She''s a psychic. Tired of being shunned, Kait accepts an invitation to attend the Zetes Institute, where she can have a fresh start and study with other psychic teens.

Learning to hone her abilities with four other gifted students, Kait discovers the intensity of her power -- and the joy of having true friends. But those friendships quickly become complicated when Kait finds herself torn between two irresistible guys. Rob is kind and athletic, and heals people with his good energy. Gabriel is aggressive and mysterious, a telepath concealing his true nature as a psychic vampire, feeding off of others'' life energy. Together, Rob and Gabriel''s opposing forces threaten the group''s stability.

Then one of the experiments traps the five teens in a psychic link. A link that threatens their sanity and their lives. And Kaitlyn must decide whom to trust...and whom to love.

Reviews

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth it. . In my honest opinion, this book was terrible. From the washed up romance of "which boy should I choose?" to the over-all perfectness of the main character, I was disappointed. Each page was predictable, I was able to tell exactly what would happen before I turned the page. You could tell exactly when Gabriel, the emo kid, was going to show up and save Kaitlyn because she is a pathetic excuse for a main character. She makes so many bad decisions, (falling for a sociopath, not shutting up when she needs to, getting the group into situations that could have been avoided) that just ruined any quality, not to mention how beautiful all the characters were. This book was maybe 70% Romance, 15% plot and 5% synonyms for attractive. . The whole time, I felt as though Anna was there to ease the sexual tension between Kait and the others, and to make Kaitlyn look better. Because Kaitlyn needed a strong man to rush in and save her, the only way to make her seem like a stronger female lead was to put in a more useless female character. Anna, despite being described as beautiful, doesn't attract the attention of any of the males until the end, when Kaitlyn chooses Gabriel over Rob in a scene that made me want to cry out urine in the corner. Finally, Rob takes Anna as the second choice, only because Kaitlyn chooses Gabriel. The other thing is Kaitlyn seems to feel as though she has control over Rob, and acts as though she chooses whether Rob and Anna have a relationship. I found that very possessive of both of them, and rather creepy. Since Anna is so submissive, even though she liked Rob, she "respects Kaitlyn's prior claim". Kaitlyn HAD no prior claim! Rob was fair game to both! Kaitlyn does NOT have the right to decide this, and basically tosses Anna the scraps. And because Anna is a submissive female role inferior to even Kaitlyn, she swallows the whole thing, not even complaining that Rob still has Kaitlyns lipstick all over his face. Something stupid as well was how quickly Gabriel accepted Kaitlyn. He rejected the others, and talked to her. Unexplained and stupid. Bleh. . Also, why are all the protagonists beautiful?! They quickly gain high status amongst a high school environment on their FIRST DAY. High School is a very judgy environment, you aren't going to be accepted THAT fast. The other thing about the school is that nothing is described. Do they meet anyone? Who are their teachers? What classes do they take? Did no one speak to them? How did they gain high status?! This made no sense. ...I feel as though I've already torn up the love triangle in this story. It seriously reminded me of Twilight, where the beautiful female lead has trouble choosing between a nice, tanned guy, and a cold icy guy who have a rivalry with each other. Though in all fairness, this book came out before Twilight, so I'm just not going to go there. . Overall this story didn't have much plot, and it seemed as though Ms. Smith realized that, and threw in some garbage consisting of about forty pages in which she turns a seemingly nice old man into a power-hungry villain. Not a good idea, it needs proper pacing. . To conclude, I do NOT recomend this book.I didn't like anything about it, because it was all rubbush. Don't read this if you want something decent

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These are reprinted books...not knock offs Just so everyone knows, these books were written WAY before any of the Twilight books, I read them when I was 11 and I'm 26 now so safe to say they have been out for more than 15 years...so please stop comparing these to Twilight! They're great books and she's an amazing author!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not that amazing i would give this book a 2.5. it was alright, i just thought that most of it was pathetic and some situations were "overreacting" if you understand what i mean. it was ok.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I have the older copy of this book second hand and I've read it several times now. I mostly read it because I love Gabriel haha. It's a very easy read and the writing is not exactly genius but the story is really very original. I also love the ending! I definitely recommend this book (or should I say these three books...)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compelling and Different! If one could start a review with one word, the word I would choose for this collection is: WOW!!! If I could have given it a 10, instead of a 5, I would have. Having read other L.J. Smith books, I was expecting a captivating story, well developed characters, intrigue, fantasy and unrivaled villainy - what I got was SO MUCH MORE! The cover really belies the story. "not all vampires are out for blood..." Frankly, I was expecting just another vampire story. But it has absolutely nothing to do with vampires at all! The basis of this story is actually much more real. A group of highly psychic teens with "strange" gifts are collected by a kindly old man to help them train and develop their skill. All this under the guise of scientific research. What lies in store is nothing short of spectacular! I would love to tell you more, but you'll have to read it to believe it. Despite the realistic setting, you'll feel as though you must have been transported to another world. I simply could not put this down. This version includes all three stories: The Strange Power, The Possessed and The Passion. Like others who've reviewed this, when it was over, I wished there was more to come.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Just An Other Vampire Story :) First, I thought I would read on of those Twilight book copies, but than I saw that the story was totally different (in a good way!). I liked the story and characters. This book is pretty easy to read, but it's interesting and mysterious. You should read it :)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It Never Got Better After all the positive comments and reviews, I was really hoping this book would blow my mind. The only thing it blew was my money. I tried so hard to keep reading, but it just didnt seem to get better; if anything, it got worse. There was nothing that I really liked about this book, so half-way through, I gave up. I wasn't a fan of the characters, storyline, writing style, etc. It seemed rather mediocre in comparison to other teen novels/series I've been reading lately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All I can say is "WOW" This book is an amazing read. First off, one good thing about this book is it is not like all the other supernaturel books and twilight.... but it has that thrilling suspense and excitement (and yes there are relationship) that will keep Twilight fans and other supernaturel fans begging for more. I find that this book should be good for everyone... There is tons of suspense and antaganists and protaganists do not neccesairly stay on the side that they were originally on... I found this book to be amazing, and will definatly be re-reading it... that is once I get it back from my line of friends waiting to read it... :) To sum it up in a sentance, this book is definatly worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is NOT another "Twilight" knock-off Just let me make one thing clear before you pick up the book or ove look it because of the book jacket: This series is NOT another Twilight knockoff. Just in case the people out there who're resistant to get on or don't like the Twilight band wagon, let me start by making it perfectly clear this book won't go against your sensibilities in that regard. This series is brilliant in its own right, with something there for everyone, regardless of their opinion towards Meyer's writing. This story centres around a group of young psychics who travel to California to be subjects for research surrounding their abilities. When things turn sinister, they go on the lamb and attempt to find help to stop the evil that's brewing in the Sunshine State. A wonderful read that fills me with joy to see reprinted since I missed the boat on buying it back in the mid-90's when it first came out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It was really good I wasn't expecting much from this book. Only because it didn't sound all THAT interesting from the back. I picked it up because it was a good deal and had heard good things about the author. I finished reading this book a few days ago and I can't tell you how much I actually liked it. I haven't had a book that I really got excited about reading at night for a while but this definitely got me. I always like a bit of romance and am a sucker for a book with some sort of fantasy or paranormal or powers and this gave me it. It is different from the usual "vampires" that you find everyone being crazed about these days (including me :S ) but it a very good way. I would recommend this to anyone who likes this type of thing. I am GLAD I bough it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved It!! Dark Visions was such a great book, I absolutely loved the plot, along with the amazing characters; You have Kaitlyn, the girl with haunting, yet beautiful eyes and autumn-fire hair..everyone thinks she's a witch, but she's no witch, just a psychic...who can draw the future. Everyone at school doesn't dare to look at her, people think she's strange, Kaitlyn just wants to fit in, and now she has the chance. She is given the opportunity to go to the Zetes Institute, where she will be tested, and live with four other gifted students....Rob, the guy with golden, wavy hair, and amber eyes, who has a remarkable gift of healing people. There's Anna, the sweet, pretty girl with long dark hair, who can communicate with animals. Lewis, the cute, nice guy who has an awesome power, psychokinesis (mind over matter)..like opening locks with his mind, making a compass needle deflect..And then there's Gabriel...the mysterious, dangerous guy who's startling handsome, with dark hair and dark eyes, but with a slightly pale face. Gabriel's a telepath...the ability to drain one person's energy in an instant..killing them. Gabriel isn't what he seems...and when an experiment traps them all in an unbreakable psychic link they learn more about each other, and what really The Zetes Institute has planned. Throughout this thrilling adventure, these five teens must save themselves, before it's too late..Kaitlyn has to decide whom she can trust, while the daunting desicion of whom to love tares her apart... I could NOT put this book down, each page leaves you dieing to know what happens next..there were so many times where I snuck a peek near the back of the book...the suspense is crazy!! The romance was unbelievable....and so unpredictable, it'll leave you hooked. I recommend this book to anyone who loves Paranormal fantasy/romance, brilliant characters, along with a suspenseful plot...I loved this novel, and I can't wait to read more of L.J Smith's books..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but predictable.... Take 1 Part Darkest powers series, 1 part Secret Circle , and add a bit of the Night world series, and top it off with psychic powers you get TADDA Dark Visions. I guess with so many stories out there in this genre there is bound to be overlapping. the nice thing is that LJ Smith is a good writer. Even though I could predict then, I caught myself sneaking peeks at the back because I was into the story. I would definately recomend it if you enjoyed any of the above series'
