The Darkest Powers Series, Book 1: The Summoning

by Kelley Armstrong

Doubleday Canada | July 1, 2008 | Trade Paperback

After years of frequent moves following her mother's death, Chloe Saunders's life is finally settling down. She is attending art school, pursuing her dreams of becoming a director, making friends, meeting boys. Her biggest concern is that she's not developing as fast as her friends are. But when puberty does hit, it brings more than hormone surges. Chloe starts seeing ghosts-everywhere, demanding her attention. After she suffers a breakdown, her devoted aunt Lauren gets her into a highly recommended group home.

At first, Lyle House seems a pretty okay place, except for Chloe's small problem of fearing she might be facing a lifetime of mental illness. But as she gradually gets to know the other kids at the home-charming Simon and his ominous, unsmiling brother Derek, obnoxious Tori, and Rae, who has a "thing" for fire-Chloe begins to realize that there is something that binds them all together, and it isn't your usual "problem kid" behaviour. And together they discover that Lyle House is not your usual group home either…

I read this a long time ago but I thought I'd do a review on it anyway. I remember I wasn't sure if I'd like this series, but I bought this book (#1) and the 2nd one at the same time. As soon as I started reading the first page of this book, I was immediately drawn in and i couldn't stop reading it! I finished it in two days, it is one of the best books in this genre I have ever read! Chloe is an awesome character and very relate-able. She gets sent to this house for troubled kids, even though it's actually for "special" kids with powers and special abilities. Her two best friends end up being 2 brothers, and they find a way to escape Lyle House. It's at the Lyle House where Chloe first discovers her real abilities, not just being able to see ghosts. Right away in the first chapter things start happening. There are a couple slow parts but none that make you want to fall asleep because they drag out so long. I devoured this book and had to read the 2nd one as soon as I finished this one!

This book is very interesting and spooky I would say especially if you read at night before bed as I do. I really enjoyed reading this book; I literally couldn't put it down. Make sure you have the next book because you will be dying to find out what happens next.

Basically the first book starts with Chloe seeing ghosts and other events that happens in Lyle House but it doesn't explain anything. So you will need the next one.

The storyline is very promising and the writing is excellent. It's a page turner and as the characters run for their lives you will find yourselves turning the pages like crazy to see what happens to them.
The characters are enjoyable but I didn't bond with any of them, hopefully the next book will change that.
Overall it's a good paranormal read nothing romantic going on as I hoped to but there are two more books so cross your fingers!

Description, from back of book (Publisher: Doubleday Canada) :

"Chloe Sanders used to have a relatively normal life. But now she finds herself in some really strange situations. She suddenly starts seeing dead people. She gets locked up in a group home for unstable teens. The group home isn't what it seems. . . ."

    My review :

A novel about a girl who sees ghost going to a home because she looks crazy might not seem like a unique plot, but I promise it is so much more than that.

I think Kelley Armstrong created a well written and unique story. "The Summoning" kept my interest the whole time. Even though the Darkest Powers trilogy is a young adult supernatural fantasy, like a lot of books authors are writing right now, I still think Armstrong did a great job to make this story her own. With the different events that take place to try and solve the situation the characters are in, and with the supernatural types that are used in the book. It was said on Kelley's site that she wanted to use supernatural species that were less common, and I think she did a pretty good job of it. Yes, there are still your usual popular werewolves, witches, and vampires. Although there are no vampire characters in this trilogy, it is just mentioned (In one of the three books in the trilogy) that they do exist in this world. Which I think is the same world as Kelly's Otherworld series. But there is also necromancers, sorcerers, demons, half-demons, ghost, and maybe more I can't think of. There is more in the other books in the trilogy too.

It was pretty mysterious and surprising. I never really knew what was going to happen next. It was suspenseful; I was clued into the story.

I love the characters. I was drawn right into Derek. I love how Chloe is the type of girl who realizes that she does stupid things sometimes, and she won't be the biggest hero out of everyone, because her powers aren't as useful as others are. I was even able to feel sorry for characters I didn't really like, and thought that they actually might be just a little crazy.
    I loved this book!

A very well written book. I absolutely loved Derek's character the moment him and Chloe have their first run in. Kelly Armstrong has done a great job with plot and character development. She really knows how to capture your attention and make you want to keep on reading. The only thing I did not like was how she left the end of the book as with all of them they end in huge cliff hangers i was just glad i had the rest of the series to read after this book. i know leaving a cliff hanger makes you want to read the next one but if i had read this when it first came out i would have been mad having to wait so long in between each book. But over all i loved the series. :)

    Great first YA read!

When I went to my local Chapters go pick up this book, my heart was racing. It was my first YA read and I didn't know what to expect!
    Boy, the book was good!
I reminded myself no one would read this 'cause no one in my class reads YA... But I made Goodreads and this Chapter's account and I can express my thoughts freely with anyone. So... Chloe Saunders and Dereek were my favourite characters and Simon was a pain in the butt. " Wow!" " Ooooh!" Those thought's travled my head as I read.
" What have I been missing out on in the YA world?"

This story is very interesting. Keeps you thinking for sure. I liked the parts about ghosts in it and the bring back the dead. Chloe isnt a girl I can relate to but I understand bits of where shes coming from. Its very confusing at some points but it sorts its self out around the end. The ending just sets you up for the second book 'The Awakening.' I kinda would have liked it if Kelly Armstrong could have showed Chloe a bit difrently. Check out my review on the second book!

The Summoning is a promising first instalment to this spooky series by Kelley Armstrong.

Choe Saunders is a 15 year old girl who just wants a regular life. But no such luck for Chloe, who has already suffered the loss of her Mother at an early age, combined with seeing ghosts when she was just a toddler has abnormal written all over her future. She does, however, get a handful of years of normalness including school, friends, and boys. The moment she becomes a woman, everything changes. Poor Chloe, hitting puberty seems to be double the curse in her case. She starts to see ghosts again which sends her into a terrified fit in public making her look like she needs to be shipped off to the loony bin. And that's exactly what happens in the most drastic manner. Chloe gets put in a group home, Lyle House, under a promise by her Father and Aunt that it will only be for a couple weeks to clear everyone's worries away. Only things don't seem that simple when Chloe settles into the group home for troubled teens. She begins to question herself, if she's really seeing ghosts or if she really is crazy as everyone is seeing her to be. Even if the doctors and her family just want her to get better on the surface, something is very wrong with this place she is stuck in. The more she gets acquainted with her peers, Rae, Simon, Derek, Liz and Tori, the more Chloe knows something bigger is going on and even feels that her life may be in danger. Along with her colourful peers, they begin to reveal the secrets of Lyle House and the history behind it.

For me, this book had a slow start and it really didn't get a grip on me until more than halfway through. On the brighter side, the pace picked up more after the halfway point, giving the spooks and thrills you expect from a ghost story. But don't worry its much more than a ghost story. The characters that Chloe interacts with in Lyle house have much to contribute with lots of surprises up their sleeve. With plenty of snarkyness, intelligence and intrigue you will be sucked into this series by the end. Being patient through the slow parts really will pay off. I really enjoyed this overall.

    Minor Spoliers.

The Summoning is the first book in The Darkest Powers Series. I've had this book on my plan to read shelf for a really long time. I saw it at Costco and just picked it up with a couple of other books to read, and I was really glad I did. The story was everything a Paranormal book really needs, cute boys, characters with rare powers, and of course an epic adventure.

Chloe Saunders, pretty, rich, fifteen, and normal. Once she reaches puberty, everything changes. An incident happens with her and a teacher, people accusing of her of fighting with him. But she saw someone, a janitor, except he wasn't really there. He was a ghost. So Chloe is being sent to Lyle House a special home for unusual teenage kids. Chloe is used to being the new kid, especially after her mom died, the only thing she left for Chloe was her red necklace, said to protect her from 'bogeymen' that she saw when she was little. Once Chloe arrives at Lyle House she meets Liz, Tori, Rae, Derek and Simon. Her roomate was Liz, her problem was that she could lift things up with her mind. And she was sent away to a different home instead. A better place for her, but Chloe began to spot her at night, wondering if it were hallucinations or not. We get introduced to Tori, her real name is Victoria. And she's the kinda of girl with rich stuck up parents, as well as a concieted queen like attitude. Chloe runs into some problems with her, but she still has Rae to depend on.

The administration gives the students pills to help them recover from their problems. So they know that she can see ghosts. But it was supposed to be a secret, until Tori shouts it out infront of everyone at Lunch because of her eavsdropping. So Derek, Simon and Rae are the only students who know her secret. Chloe got along with Simon, as with Derek, well he kind of creeped her out. Simon and Derek are foster brothers since they were five. Derek was sent to live with Simon and his dad, so they were practically best friends.

Once Chole gets comfortable with both of the boys, they decide to plan an escape from Lyle House. To find their Dad, who can help with them with the tense situation they were in. Rae joins along, but someone rats them out. They think it was Tori. But well...Let's just say the people they thought they knew aren't really the people they expected.

This was my favourite book in the series. lots of adventure and kept you on your toes as the mysteries unveiled themselves. However I was not happy with the ending. It seemed as though she was just racing to the end without caring how that happened. Otherwise I recommend this book to everyone.

After reading the entire series of "Otherworld" novels, I thought it was time to try another series that Kelley Armstrong has created.

The Summoning is a very interesting and creative novel about a girl named Chloe that experiences some very unusual and frightening events, which unfortunately leads her to a home for troubled/mentally ill teens. You feel a lot of emotion for Chloe as she faces a world of doctors, medication, new friends and enemy's.

This book is very interesting and leaves you wanting more. Luckily there is a second and third book to keep you occupied.

So I bought this book last year at a summer book fair, I was not expecting to like it cus me and Kelley weren't friends after reading Bitten, which I felt was mediocre at best this book came as a surprise. First I was all like typical teenage stuff, girl complaining about life, afraid to ask boy to the dance typical stuff. Until this girl starts to see things that no one else can and then it became all kinds of interesting.

Chloe Saunders is having some weird dreams about basements and ghosts, with no idea where they are coming from she easily forgets it. Until she gets her period and then all hells breaks loose. Yeh I know its sounds crazy right, but its true. With this new walk into womanhood comes ghost, and this one's face is all burnt up and Chloe is two seconds away from losing it. A run in with a teacher, who claims Chloe became violent, leads her to being incarcerated at some group home like place called Lyle House. That is when all that Chloe knows no longer exists, she is about to enter into a world she never thought possible and find friends in this unlikely place.

Well something is up, the kids in this house don't seem quite normal especially the huge boy with the acne face who gives Chloe the creeps. Derek is a brooder but he seems to know a lot more than he is letting on; him and his brother. A talk with the house doctor claims Chloe has schizophrenia, and that seems impossible because she still is seeing ghosts. Well going along with their diagnosis seems to be the better thing to do, the quicker she can leave.

Well there is something fishy up with Lyle House and the people who run it, all the kids seem to have some kind of power and some are turning up dead. A quick plan for an escape comes up and thus begins the beginning of their lives. Chloe will come to learn she is a necromancer( can raise the dead) and a powerful one, there is a company hell bent on harvesting supernatural's and if they seem defective they are terminated. Life aint easy for this 15 year old.

This book was a prime example of pill pushing, your kid seems to be acting out of character, so that means they have a mental illness. How about you try talking, that works where I come from. Plus this book characters are so well developed it just blew my mind, they seem adult yet they manage to still come off as teenagers, very realistic. It's also creepy all that raising the dead was well done.
The character of Chloe is likable, lets talk about Derek I love him. He is described as being ugly and scary but the way he is super sexy. Yeh I know its YA, but he is still sexy, the other characters create a good foundation for a very solid read. As I said I was surprised that it was sooooo good, and I will be continuing the series.

This is the first book in the Darkest Powers Trilogy. It is definitely suspenseful and a page turner. Don't wait too long before checking this out!

For the plot: (Warning: may contain spoilers!)

From the time Chloe was a little girl, she had a special gift. No one took it seriously because they didn't know the truth…or did they? This special gift faded as she grew older but, after finally getting her period at the age of fifteen Chloe gets this gift back; she begins to see people who aren't really there. People make her believe she is crazy, her own father and aunt send her to a crazy home for teenagers… but she soon discovers she is not the only one with a special gift, and she is not really crazy.
