Darkfever: The Fever Series

by Karen Marie Moning

Random House Publishing Group | August 28, 2007 | Mass Market Paperbound

MacKayla Lane's life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she's your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death-a cryptic message on Mac's cell phone-Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister's killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed-a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister's death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane-an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women-closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac's true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book-because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….

The novel is about a southern belle named MacKayla (or Mac for short) who’s sister is murdered in Ireland and after the Garda (Ireland’s police) stops there investigation into her sister’s murder, she goes off to Ireland to get them to reopen the case. When she arrives in Ireland her whole world goes to the dogs with some big surprises. I guess I should have read the genre for this novel before I read it. I guess adult theme means that there will be some pretty sexually imagery in the novel. I must say that I was quite surprised that the book grabbed me so fast. The thing I think I like the most about this novel was the way everything off the wall throughout the novel seemed so new to me but as if I knew already what the things were. It’s differently a thrill ride the whole way with so surprising graphic sexual images. I did find that the graphic sexually imagery could have been left out and this would have still been a really good novel. I did enjoy this novel, originally I was going to throw it in the category of a book I don’t normally read, which is true but I guess it’s got to go into the trilogy category because I’ve got four more books in the series to read.

The main character is MacKayla (Mac) Lane. Mac is a sidhe-seer, which is someone who can see the true nature of the Fae and are not fooled by Fae glamour or magic, but she can be hurt by them. Her life changes when her sister, Alina, is murdered in Ireland. Mac goes to Ireland despite her parent's disapproval to find out what happened to Alina. Once Mac gets there her whole life is turned upside down again. Alina left a message for Mac telling her to find the Sinsar Dubh and that a man who she thought loved her was one of them and out to get her. The problem with this is that Alina didn't tell her how to find the Sinsar Dubh or her boyfriend's name. Now the action starts.
DARKFEVER is a fast paced, well written book. I liked the storyline, I like the paranormal suspense, and the characters are well developed. This is book one in the FEVER series and I look forward to reading book two, this was a fun read.

Mac is 22 years old and living with her parents in Georgia. Her sister, Alina, has gone to study for a year in Dublin, but when Mac gets a phone call that Alina has been murdered, her world changes forever. Mac heads to Ireland to find out what happened to Alina, and discovers things about herself, and the world, that she really never wanted to know. There is (literally) a world, a supernatural world, she knew nothing about.

I really liked it. There were even some humorous bits, as Mac is really a girly girl, shoved into this dark supernatural world. Some of the most exciting parts for me were before Mac learned some of the supernatural stuff. Overall, though, I really did enjoy it. It did end on a bit of a cliffhanger, though. If I'm lucky, it won't be too long before I get to book two.

O.K before I get right into it I want anyone reading this with an interest in reading the book to know; KEEP AN OPEN MIND!
I Have read every book by Karen and I can honestly say this IS different but different in one of the best ways possible. If, as a reader you enjoyed the mystery behind the fae, and you loved the magic behind our Mackelter druids than this may be the book for you. If , I think like most romance readers, you are looking for something new and juicy to keep you up late at night this may not be it. As a die hard reader/writer myself I absolutely love the way Karen has managed to capture a characters' personality change that is this dramatic! There is no way for me to describe how much fun it is to read along with Mackayla and try and relate with what it is like for her to go through her emotional ups and downs in a completely different world; and trust me when I say DARKFEVER gives you a small yet detailed insight on what the next fever book will bring to the 'human' world.
Darkfever is first person so be prepared for a few dry parts in the novel. Like I said if you want something juicy RIGHT NOW then maybe you should hold off until the next few books are published.
Ireland is a magical place and I think that going from Highland lovers to mysterious killers is a great way to turn into the real magic of the dark and light seelie. LIFE is not as easy as the everyday romance novel and I think this new book will give readers the fantasy world of the fae PLUS the romance of real life, If people are willing to give it a chance.
Anyway I guess you'll only know if you read it yourself. HAPPY HUNTING MAC I CAN'T WAIT!!
