The Basis for a New Showtime® Original Series Starring Michael C. Hall
(Sundays at 10pm ET/PT - starts Sunday, October 1, 2006 at 10pm ET/PT)

Meet Dexter Morgan, a polite wolf in sheep's clothing. He's handsome and charming, but something in his past has made him abide by a different set of rules. He's a serial killer whose one golden rule makes him immensely likeable: he only kills bad people. And his job as a blood splatter expert for the Miami police department puts him in the perfect position to identify his victims. But when a series of brutal murders bearing a striking similarity to his own style start turning up, Dexter is caught between being flattered and being frightened-of himself or some other fiend.

This was anothe rbook chosen for the book club i am in. I could of done without reading this book. I didnt find it funny, like the reviews on the back of the cover... i found it dull, and though it was an easy read, i easily put the book down! Not my kind of book.

Great if you haven't seen the show 4

If you haven't watched the Dexter series, shown on HBO and now Showcase, you will love this book. If you have seen the series, you will be bored. The series is taken almost directly from the book, almost word for word in some instances. The only difference is that some of the characters are slightly different in the book compared to the series. I saw the TV show first and then read the book. I wish I had done it the opposite way. If you like quirky, different stories, you'll like this.

Dexter, Dexter, Dexter, How I love thee, let me count the ways, One dead body, two dead bodies, three.... Dexter is an average Joe that no one will take a second glance to because he makes it his life's mission to be as unnoticable as possible. He dresses as mundane as possible. Befriends, but not too friendly, everyone. He says the right thing at the right time. Smiles when he needs to smile and laughs when he needs to laugh. He is programmed to be Mr. Normal. Why? Because Dexter is… read more

Interesting, but not the Showtime Show. 3

This review is from: Darkly Dreaming Dexter (Trade Paperback)

Fans of the Showtime series may find this book a tad disappointing at times. While the story arc is very similar to season 1, the ending is quite different and characters other than Dexter himself remain underdeveloped and seem mostly to be incidental vehicles to help drive the plot. Many of the nuances of the TV shows that psychology (or at least serial killer) buffs recognize that make the show realistic are absent from the novel. Does Dexter have a conscience, or merely a set of ethics?

    Comments on this review:
    • Honestly, I started watching the show a while back and just loved it. Since I thought so highly of the show I mostly expected the book to be a disappointment. ... read more

Previously perplexed Pamela's past postulation of the preposterous popularity of HBO's Dexter has diminished and she is now pleasantly surprised by reading Darkly Dreaming Dexter. ; ) After learning about the character through first person narration, I have now connected with this bizarre sociopath (can we even call him that, being he has a conscience) and will have the patience to make it past two episodes and possibly even become a fan in accordance with the masses. www.booksnakereviews… read more

    Marvelously, morbidly macabre. 4

Written in eyes of Dexter himself, this book is descriptive and delicious. Dexter is truly a unique creation, the man we love to hate. The book "sets my teeth on edge." Excellent.
