Dear John

by Nicholas Sparks

Grand Central Publishing | December 1, 2009 | Mass Market Paperbound

An angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life--until he meets the girl of his dreams, Savannah. Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. "Dear John," the letter read...and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true love--and face the hardest decision of his life.

I read this book because of the movie. I cried twice. It is a beautifully sad love story. I did not like the ending though. Read it to find out!
    Book and movie were amazing!

This is a classic love at first sight story between John and Savannah. They first meet during John's short leave from the army and Savannah's summer vacation where she and other students volunteered to help build houses for families in the area. They meet on the beach and this soon turns into a rollercoaster of emotions between the two.

You will definitely laugh and cry while reading this passionate story written in John's point of view. It reveals the true meaning of love and what one person is willing to give up in order to make the one they love truly happy.

Wow...this will definitely not be my first and last Nicholas Sparks novel. To say I thoroughly enjoyed this novel is an understatement. Perhaps it is because I purchased this book with low expectations, but I must say, from the first page on, I was pleasingly surprised as the story unfolded. Sparks has an incredible ability to write in such a way that you almost feel as if the characters' happiness, sadness, hope and fear were your own. The ending left me with a surge of sadness and although it was far from what I had wanted or expected to be the story's end, it was nevertheless a perfect and deeply powerful one.

Wow, I did not expect this book to be as emotionally intense as it was. It got so captivating near the end, that I never wanted to put it down. The love Sparks created between John and Savannah was so unbelievable, It was heartwarming and very unpredictable, which I liked. No book has yet to make me shed a tear, until now! I've come close to crying in some books, but this one left me sad to the point where I had to stop reading and gather myself together. I can truly say that this book has left it's imprint on me, and every time I look back on this story, I will remember how real it seemed to me. It'll make you smile, cry, hope, and wonder. I only gave it four stars because of the ending. I mean, it was good, but not that satisfying. I am so glad that I read the book before I've seen the movie, it's one of those books that will probably comes to life better than the actual movie, but the movie looks great too! I don't want to say what the book is about, because its better not knowing what's going to happen. The element of surprise makes this book a thousand times better. There were many shocks and surprises, but all you need to know is that this is the love story between John and Savannah. They meet, and in the matter of days it feels as if they've known each other forever. But, this story isn't all romance. Time passes, things change. Sparks keeps you captivated and intrigued. It's so amazingly written that tears will well up in your eyes, and the intensity of the emotions will leave you breathless.

i read this book about a week ago maybe, i wanted to read it because the movie just came out and when ever a movie comes out and there is a book i always read the book first to compare things. i read this book and its written in 3 parts . part one is when there first falln in love and he goes off to war and i loved it. second part is when 9/11 happens and john decides to support his country and stay for another 2 years. savannah falls in love with somebody else ( wont say ! ) and thats when she writes a fare well letter, i will admit i cryed ! th third pat is when he comes back on leave , his dad is sick and dies and he visis savannha to see how she is , only to find out her husbend is sick and could possibly die , savannah cant afford this special treatment that could save his life, but john can when he sells his dead fathers beoved coin collection . in the end john and savnna dont end up together ( tear ) but i loved it any way . it shows us readers that people dont always get what they want, or need in life and i think we can all learn from john in his experience .i loved the book and recommend it to any one who loves a good read !

It is a very realistic love story. The outcome of this is something that would most likely happen in the outcome of the events. It makes your heart warm and I cried twice when reading it. I could barely put it down. I would love to read it again!

I've never read Nicholas Sparks before, but I had higher expectations. I thought the story would be interesting yet romantic, but I felt like there wasn't enough character development. The characters say they love eachother within two weeks of meeting! It felt a little naive and unrealistic. The ending, however, was actually surprisingly good, and pulls together the whole theme of love. The first part of the book just needed to delve deeper into the characters and the story. It's a quick, light read and I was glad I stuck with it.

    Waste of Time

Nicholas Sparks has written quite a few books that delve into the true complexity of human emotions.
This book however, was way over the top to try and capture feelings that just did not exist. The story line was transparent by the 3rd chapter and the character builds were lacking at best.
Sparks has definitely written much better books than this one and unfortunately this one falls in the waste-of-time category.

    Pass The Kleenex

This review is from: Dear John (Trade Paperback)

Sparks is one of the few authors I've read that can move you in so many ways and in the end, whether it's the ending you wanted or not, you're left with a tale that leaves an imprint on your heart.

I was suppose to get lots done the day I started to read this and instead of working out or doing laundry I sat and read. I couldn't put this book down and it totally messed up my day of productiveness, which I'm okay with because when you're lost in such an inspiring book laundry really can wait, sadly there are no such things are laundry gnomes.

John Tyree was a brilliant character and his personal growth was what made this book so addictive. Watching him change from a rebel to a really deep and carrying gentlemen was beautiful. While the book is plugged as a romance I think what always sets Sparks apart from others is all the small storylines he incorporates. "Dear John" is so much more than just John & Savannanh's romance.

The tale of John reconnecting with his father after so many years of separation is often what had me grabbing for the kleenex. Their journey, that was first nudged by Savannah, was heart breaking and beautiful and will especially move those that have had a parent with a disability, strong or mild. Even the story of Alan, Tim's younger autistic brother, left its mark and he was a minor-minor character. Somehow Sparks' makes every single character compelling.

As always, there's so much content and layers to the plot and characters. They feel tangible to me and their journeys, while often breaking your heart at some point, are honest and real. It's life and life is never perfect, there are flaws and mistakes and regrets but you push through and make the most of it.

A true journey of love and what it means to love and at times, what it costs.
