The Debt-Free Graduate: How to Survive College or University Without Going Broke

by Murray Baker

Harper Collins Canada | February 1, 1999 | Trade Paperback

An update of the guide no student can afford to be without

Since The Debt-Free Graduate was published in 1996, 10,000 copies have been sold -- and tuition fees have more than doubled in some provinces. Bankruptcies among new graduates escalate at an alarming rate. And the media is sitting up and taking notice -- chronicling the lives of a generation that could be trapped for life by debt racked up in the pursuit of an education.

More than ever, students need financial advice on how to avoid terminal indebtedness. The Debt-Free Graduate (Revised Edition) delivers that -- and more. In the same witty, accessible and down-to-earth style that made the first edition so successful, Murray Baker gives updated information and timely advice on the latest tax, RRSP and loan rules, including:
-- How to navigate changing provincial and federal loan and bursary programs
-- How the new RRSP rules affect students
-- Where to find online information on scholarships, loans, housing and jobs
-- New ways to save on travel
-- Making the most of ever-changing student health care plans
-- Tackling the realities of debt repayment, loan consolidation and interest relief
-- The real costs of declaring personal bankruptcy

Readers will find a wealth of advice on turning student status into a financial advantage.

A must for every student. I was notoriously bad at managing my personal finances when a concerned friend gave me a copy of "The Debt Free Graduate". It is impossible to go through this book and not find practical, easy to understand advice and tips that you can actually use. By re-evaluating my finances and using this book as a guideline, I turned myself around and haven’t looked back. In fact, several years later the only debt I owe right now is the one of gratitude to my friend for giving me the book. On many occasions I have given a copy of this book to other people, hoping that they too will find it as beneficial as I did.
