    Excellent!

Can't add much to what the other reviewers have said, but this is an excellent book, great story, fascinating characters, particularly the main character ... detailed world where you will be lost in the story. I read the new book first, wish I hadn't and that I'd found this book long before! Looking forward to the others that are coming out.

If you are looking for a book with incredible characters and a fascinating story, stop looking. This is it! I loved this book from start to finish. Paks was a believable and likeable character that made you want know more. I also enjoyed the look into military life - of a sort - from a woman’s point of view. Sometimes in the fantasy genre, the main female characters are too predictable and too perfect. Elizabeth Moon got this character just right. This is a story about a woman who has to learn it all and work darn hard. A role model in the fantasy world.

A Great Leap in High Fantasy

This is the first time that a female protagonist is presented without messing around with the feminist agenda. When I want to read feminism in the protagonist, I know who to read. But in this case, the writer creates a compelling story, that has so many twists and turns. Her protagonist goes through so much trauma, that the reader is carried through. A real hero, who is not coddled throughout the story.

Elizabeth Moon offers an intensely readable adventure complete with all the prerequisites of the very best fantasy. A believable plot, a loveable heroine, elves, wizards, mages and villains will keep you spellbound as Paksenarrion's world leaps off the page. My original copy has been read and reread until the only thing keeping the pages intact is a broad elastic band!

From the Jacket

Never in our experience has a new author burst upon the sf/fantasy field to such immediate enthusiastic recognition as Elizabeth Moon with her fantasy trilogy, Sheepfarmer''s Daughter, Divided Allegiance, and Oath of Gold. Now at last we are able to offer all six hundred thousand words of The Deed of Paksenarrion in a single trade edition. Note that because of its size the complete Deed of Paksenarrion will probably never be offered in a mass market edition.
