Demons Not Included: A Night Tracker Novel

by Cheyenne McCray

St. Martin's Press | June 2, 2009 | Mass Market Paperbound

Meet Nyx. This half-human, half-Drow private eye investigates paranormal crimes by day and is an elite Tracker of demons by night. She prefers working solo-and playing rough. So when a terrifying force starts murdering innocent humans and paranorms, and leaving strange demonic symbols burned into their buildings, it's a case Nyx takes very personally…

Meanwhile, Nyx's fellow Trackers are being killed one by one-and a sexy new Tracker named Torin is shadowing her every move. Torin has powers Nyx can't read, and sometimes she wonders whose side he's on. Nyx's instincts tell her something's brewing in the city's meanest supernatural streets, and that it's ready to unleash hell on Earth. Who can she trust? Now it's five minutes to permanent midnight…and Nyx's last chance means risking everything-even her own life.

After reading this, I'm tempted to dig up an old dairy from when I was 10 years old and go make a ton of money off of one of my "Maybe I'm a special Princess with magical powers!" angsty entries, since it really does seem to be that easy

I'm surprised I actually made it through this book, which I can credit towards a novel premise I was curious to see the end of, and a healthy dose of stubbornness.

The main character reads like the flight of fancy of a socially awkward pre-teen. She's rich, she has super powers, she's irresistible to all men and all women want to be her friend. Oh, and she's a princess! Her minor insecurities are contrived, caused by a shallow, undeveloped encounter with a man, and are similarly solved.

I can't quite understand what it was trying to be: a fluffy, feel-good dime-store romance with a supporting mystery story line, or a dime-store thriller mystery with a supporting romance. It does neither of these things well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the fluffy beach read romance / whatever, but even the cheap "harlequin suspense" romance novels make a bigger effort to create real people and a convincing story arc.

Ok I liked Cheyenne McCray's previous series so I decided to pick this book.

It's the beginning of her next series. The Night Trackers.

I think in her excitement to start a new series Cheyenne forgot something. BACK STORY! If I have to infer from context one more idea i am not buying the second book. (ok yes I am, but i'm hopeless)

It was an ok read except for that. If you liked her last series (that whole d'anu witch thing) you'll probably like this one.

The only thing I've read by McCray is her book First Sin and it was good. I guess I'll steer clear of this one....2 reviews, both bad and really low maple leaf rating - not a good sign.

    Horrible

I was not impressed at all with this book. It was written in first person which I discovered I did not like and after skipping thru most of the book the hero leaves the herione because she slept with another man just days before they hook up. So after fighting all these evil forces and "saving the world" she is left wondering if her man will forgive her for being promiscuous. A waste of money!
