Consider the fact that I have nothing else to read and had a bit of hope that the second novel would be better than the first, Elixir. I can never be more disappointed than I was in Devoted. This novel felt a little longer than Elixir, but it ruined my expectations. At the end of the first novel, Sage has disappeared and holds the only weapon that can kill him forever. Great cliff hanger, although I would have enjoyed another clue to where Clea's dad was. And isn't it ironic how the beginning of the second novel starts with talking about Clea's dad, who might as well be dead considering Clea isn't even trying to search for him anymore. She's given up hope on finding her dad. The second novel circles around the idea of how the two groups, the Saviors and Cursed Vengence want to get the remaining Elixir of Life out of Sage's body because he is the only one with the elixir running through his veins. About a third of the novel's chapters are through a little girl's perspective who drank the elixir years ago. You can say her and her family are physically dead as the elixir has stopped supporting their body, but rather their mind and soul. So, through the girl's POV, Amelia, we learn how the elixir is dangerous yet needed at the same time. But in the end, the only way for the two groups to deal with the elixir is draining it out of Sage, killing him in the end. On the other hand, Clea has become a broken hearted girl because she can end up losing Sage at any moment. She's trying her best to find him and convince him not to give up on their romance through his dreams. While doing so, Clea becomes jealous of her best friend/bodyguard, Ben's new relationship. I mean she pushed him away and yet she's jealous? Devoted has lost sight on what its predecessor started. The book doesn't talk about Clea's dad or the elixir and it's abilities. The second novel focuses more on Clea and Sage's love for each other. I would have been fine with this if Ben didn't feel so bad. What happened at the end though completely ruined any romance shipping possible. If you were "meh" about Elixir, then you will absolutely be disgusted with Devoted. There is a third novel in the trilogy, but I really want to know what happens with Clea and Sage now that he has lost the Elixir of Life. That is the only reason I will be reading the next novel, if there is one.

I'm so sick of Sage. I was hoping that this book would be a continuation of Clea's search for her father, but once again we are left looking for answers. It took me quite a while to finish the book as I found it dragged on and on. The story line was dull and I found I was extremely annoyed with the book by the end of it. I did not like the Amelia storyline, and found her chapters extremely irritating to read because of the italics.

Really, Hilary, did you have NOTHING better to write about, that you had to tell us in 10 million ways, how much Clea missed Sage and just couldn't live without him in a few CHAPTERS? The first probably 4 or 5 chapters is Sage Sage SAGE, I thought Clea was searching for her father who mysteriously disappeared??? I thought this was supposed to be a continuation of Elixir, ya, it's the 2nd book in the series but in Devoted, it's all about finding Sage, it would have been so much better if Hilary had kept more with the original story of finding Clea's dad, and search for Sage on the side, not make it ALL ABOUT SAGE. Clea annoyed me so much a lot in this book. I'm amazed Ben was even willing to help her at all. I think my favourite thing about this book was Amelia's side of the story. It was different and done better than Clea's story. Overall, Devoted was good, but could have been way better. The story line was good, but a lot of it was detailed to death to fill a blank page. The only reason Hilary Duff got a publishing deal is because she's already famous, otherwise she'd have to get a lot more writing experience before she ever made it as an author.
