Diary Of A Wimpy Kid #1

by Jeff Kinney

Harry N. Abrams | April 1, 2007 | Hardcover

Boys don't keep diaries—or do they?

The launch of an exciting and innovatively illustrated new series narrated by an unforgettable kid every family can relate to

It's a new school year, and Greg Heffley finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. The hazards of growing up before you're ready are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary.

In book one of this debut series, Greg is happy to have Rowley, his sidekick, along for the ride. But when Rowley's star starts to rise, Greg tries to use his best friend's newfound popularity to his own advantage, kicking off a chain of events that will test their friendship in hilarious fashion.

Author/illustrator Jeff Kinney recalls the growing pains of school life and introduces a new kind of hero who epitomizes the challenges of being a kid. As Greg says in his diary, “Just don't expect me to be all ‘Dear Diary' this and ‘Dear Diary' that." Luckily for us, what Greg Heffley says he won't do and what he actually does are two very different things.

Since its launch in May 2004 on Funbrain.com, the Web version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid has been viewed by 20 million unique online readers. This year, it is averaging 70,000 readers a day.

My son loves to read this book any chance he can get.
I find some of the words a bit inappropriate for his age. The word moron is used quite often in the book - which is a word we do not use in our house. However, I took it as an opportunity to discuss with my son the meaning of the word and why we don't use it.

I recommend this book to children\teens that has problems in high or elemtary school because this book is about a kid that has struggles with his life and how he get through it.

When i read this book I found it funny, entertaining, and educational because the mistakes the kid does are the mistakes I would, could, and did do when i was a child myself.
And i learned got to see a preview of waht he would do to solve that problem and learn from it.

When i saw the trailers for the movie i didn't find as entertaining as the book because the erlationship with the ook and the movie was to far apart.

After reading the first "diary of a wimpy kid" book i wanted to see the second one, to see if it was as entertaining as the first one and i must say that the whole diary of a wimpy kid series is very much both entertaing and educational for students and teens. I recommend the first to last book of the diary of a wimpy kid to teens and students.

Getting my son to pick a book and read is torture. I bought him the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and he has read them all from cover to cover more than once. Not only that, he takes excellent care of them and forbids his sisters from touching them. Thank you Jeff Kinney for making reading fun!

    Great for reluctant readers

Speaking as a grown-up, Greg Heffley reminds me a lot of Scarlett O'Hara - I didn't really like him, but I couldn't wait to see what he'd do next. He's not an admirable character, but he's three dimensional and recognizable as a real person. His diary reads like a time-warp to middle school, and I totally understand why millions of kids (boys and girls) are all over this series.

The format of the book is diary entries illustrated with cartoons. It doesn't have a traditional plot, but is truly a diary - a description of disconnected events over the course of a school year - which means it's easy to pick up and put back down without losing track of what's happening. For these reasons, it's a great pick for reluctant readers.

I'm responding to Amber Gande's comment. She really should have stopped at "I haven't read this book". I gave this book to my 9-year old son as part of his Christmas stocking. He read it in it's entirety in two days. Sure some of the diary entries use language that some adults may find cringe-worthy but it's largely inocuous, witty, well written and the language is truly nothing that her 7-year old hasn't heard in his/her school yard. I believe that part of my job as a parent is to help my kids interpret the information that they see/read so that they can learn to be critical thinkers. Clearly the reviewer doesn't share this view.

Ok, I admit, I've not read this book. It was recommended to me at a Chapter's store. I was looking for a book for my 7 year old son who is a fairly advanced reader. I read the first 8 or 10 pages. I thought it was pretty cute UNTIL I came across two parts which I found very inapropriate.

In one passage he speaks of ensuring he sits between "two HOT GIRLS" in his classroom (vs sitting between two unattractive boys). I found calling girls "HOT" in a children's book very ODD. A page or two later the main character speaks of one of those girls possibly "liking him because he has a CUTE BUTT". Seriously, do we need to encourage this sexualized talk with our kids? They'll get it enough from the rest of the world, and in their later years. I just don't think that this is the kind of thing that my 7 year old son needs to read. (and I'm FAR from a prude, FYI).

I put the book back, and informed the employee of my concerns!

    Cheesy Laughter

Diary of a Wimpy Kid submerges us into the world of Middle school. Greg Heffley is the arrogant yet lovable main character. His gullible best friend Rowley, is the sometimes sidekick. And there is a piece of nasty cheese stuck to the playground.

Follow Greg & Rowley through this eventful school year. From Halloween and Snowdays to Gym class and avoiding the Cheese. Will their friendship survive when one becomes 'popular'?

This hilariously funny story will have you laughing out loud.

Recommended for readers of all ages.

Hilarious and not just for boys, Diary of a Wimpy Kid has already been a huge success in America and across the world. Originally published as a series of cartoons, it is now available in book format complete with illustrations and at least two more books are due to follow. The book introduces us to Greg Heffley, Greg is stuck in the middle wherever he goes, as he is trapped between an annoying younger brother and a sneaky older one and has also just started middle school, where he is not quite part of the popular set but not a complete loser. Greg’s trials and mishaps at middle school are hilariously recounted and are guaranteed to make you laugh out loud. This book will hold the attention of even the most reluctant reader as you will be racing ahead to find out what Greg gets up to next as he battles bullies, brothers, parents and teachers and attempts to become one of the popular kids even cashing in on his hapless best friend’s rising star. I would recommend ,this book to anyone male or female from 8 upwards it’s a hoot

    Never Too Old

I might be a little too old to read books like this, but I did enjoy it. it was a cute story, and really did remind me of my days in middle school. I would most likely give it to any little boy reaching the age of middle school.

What a great idea for a book!! I love the style of it being written in a diary although the main character prefers it be called a journal. The small cartoons are hilarious and really add to the book. I will definitely have my sons read it when they are older!

I have read all three of the books in this series, and I have to say, although short and easy to read these are one of the funniest books I have ever read. Honestly I find myself laughing every time I turn a page! Great for skeptical readers- two thumbs up for both Jeff Kinney and Greg Heffley!
