Diary Of A Wimpy Kid #3 - The Last Straw: The Last Straw

by Jeff Kinney

Harry N. Abrams | January 13, 2009 | Hardcover

The highly anticipated third book in the critically acclaimed and bestselling series takes the art of being wimpy to a whole new level.

Let's face it: Greg Heffley will never change his wimpy ways. Somebody just needs to explain that to Greg's father. You see, Frank Heffley actually thinks he can get his son to toughen up, and he enlists Greg in organized sports and other “manly" endeavors. Of course, Greg is able to easily sidestep his father's efforts to change him. But when Greg's dad threatens to send him to military academy, Greg realizes he has to shape up . . . or get shipped out.

Greg and his family and friends, who make the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books a must-read for middle school readers, are back and at their best in this hilarious new installment of the series, which is sure to please current fans while attracting new ones.

Publishers Weekly-1/19/2009:

The third book in this genre-busting series is certain to enlarge Kinney's presence on the bestseller lists, where the previous titles have taken up residence for the past two years. Kinney's spot-on humor and winning formula of deadpan text set against cartoons are back in full force. This time, Greg starts off on New Year's Day (he resolves to “help other people improve," telling his mother, “I think you should work on chewing your potato chips more quietly") and ends with summer vacation. As he fends off his father's attempts to make him more of a man (the threat of military school looms), Greg's hapless adventures include handing out anonymous valentines expressing his true feelings (“Dear James, You smell"), attempting to impress his classmate Holly and single-handedly wrecking his soccer team's perfect season. Kinney allows himself some insider humor as well, with Greg noting the “racket" children's book authors have going. “All you have to do is make up a character with a snappy name, and then make sure the character learns a lesson at the end of the book." Greg, self-centered as ever, may be the exception proving that rule. Ages 8–12. (Jan.)

This is the third installment in Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid. We follow Greg through his life with his family, friends and school life.

I enjoyed all of the books in the series for their laugh out loud humour, wit and banter.

    Great Book!

This book is the third book in the Diary of the Wimpy Kid series but the plot is still fresh and funny. Greg Heffley isn't your average middle school student- its obvious he'll never lose his wimpy ways like wearing his Mom's bathrobe and sleeping under the vent to warm himself up every morning, playing tricks on his oh-so-nerdy best friend Rowley, trying to get the most popular girl in school to like him even though he's got no chance and trying to sell his little brother Manny out although he'll never get caught. Greg's quirky and funny- so are his most personal thoughts and feelings. Bravo, Jeff Kinney! You've created a lovable series skeptical readers are going to devour.

My sister bought this and I just read it for fun. It was quick and a little funny sometimes. Anyways, it kept my attention for about an hour. Obviously for younger readers.

I love these books! They are priceless comedy that anyone with siblings can relate to, no matter the age! And if you're young enough to have gone through middle school (yes I have!) you can totally relate to everything from the teachers, to the way kids act, to the huge change from elementary school. Greg covers all the bases!

Greg is back with the third installment of his diary and this years just as crazy as the past two have been! His Dad is worried that his sons aren't as macho as those of his boss so he forces Greg to join a soccer team, then boy scouts and finally when that doesn't turn out he threatens Greg with military school. Greg is horrified at the thought! So he spends what time he has to try and impress a girl from school. The catch? She doesn't know he exists and thinks his dopey friend is the cutest thing! Manny and Roderick are still ruining Greg's life (Roderick takes April Fools Day too far and Manny gets the whole family kicked out of Easter service church), as are his parents attempts to change their underachiever-of-a-son into a macho man. Thankfully an unfortunate accident turns out to be Greg's big break!

Perfect for anyone with a sense of humour!
