Dime Store Magic

by Kelley Armstrong

Random House Of Canada | March 27, 2007 | Mass Market Paperbound

Paige Winterbourne was always either too young or too rebellious to succeed her mother as leader of one of the world's most powerful elite organizations-the American Coven of Witches. Now that she is twenty-three and her mother is dead, the Elders can no longer deny her. But even Paige's wildest antics can't hold a candle to those of her new charge-an orphan who is all too willing to use her budding powers for evil . . . and evil is all too willing to claim her. For this girl is being pursued by a dark faction of the supernatural underworld. They are a vicious group who will do anything to woo the young, malleable, and extremely powerful neophyte, including commit murder-and frame Paige for the crime. It's an initiation into adulthood, womanhood, and the brutal side of magic that Paige will have to do everything within her power to make sure they both survive.

What an intesting world she's created

Okay. I had started this book a while ago only to get a couple of chapters in and discover it was the third in a series. So I went back and read the first two and then read this one again. I really liked Bitten and Stolen. And I did like this one, but not as much as the first two. Mostly because I absolutely despised the character of Savannah. I can't stand pre-teen/teenage brats. She was the most spoiled, demanding, selfish little twunt I have ever read in a story. I'm not looking forward to having to read this character in the other books. I really hope that Armstrong tones her down because she was so unlikeable.

She was the kind of character I was just hoping would die by the end.

Though I have to say. Armstrong's stories are much better than LKH's

    Witches At Their Best

This book continues the story of Paige Winterborne, a witch who we meet in an early Kelley Armstrong book Stolen. Paige has decided to care for Savananna, a young teenage witch who's mother Eve was practicing dark magic. The Witch Coven isn't pleased, especially when Savananna's father, tries to take custody of her. Paige is fighting for Savananna's very soul.

Paige has to find a lawyer who is willing to try her case but one find's her. Lucas Cortez, a sorcerer takes on the case and does what he can to save both Paige and Savananna from evil forces. A bit of romance also ties into this story.

Paige starts out a weak character, but I find her getting stronger and more independent each chapter which is great. She finally is moving away from her mother's shadow and coming into her own.

    Another great Kelley Armstrong read.

A different opinion - I really liked this!

While I understand what the other reviewer of this book is saying, I had a different reaction to Paige entirely . I really like the way Kelley Armstrong links her books and develops her characters across books, while still being a strong enough writer that each book also stands fully on its own if you don't read the others (but, really why WOULDN'T you read the others?!). In this case, the book Industrial Magic, which continues Paige's story, allows her to become more of the kick-butt witch, so she really evolves from this first outing, and let's be fair to the character - given Paige's history and what she went through, its hardly fair to compare her to Elena. I like my characters with a few flaws and weaknesses, especially when they live in such a weird world as Kelley Armstrong's characters do because it makes them more human to me and I can really relate to them and care about what happens to them.

    Paige the Pansy

As with most Kelley Armstrong books I gotta say I really liked it! Her supernaturals are so well thought out that I always enjoy the read. This book however, fails to entirely live up to Bitten and Stolen. Paige just isn't as good a character as Elena. She seemed a little too girly for me, and a little too dependent on her Coven. I couldn't identify with her like i could with Elena.
I did give this book a four though so I should probably explain that. The plot was great. Lucas, Savannah, and the other various baddies were great characters too. It was well-paced and very interesting.
I totally recommend this book to read, it's a very good book. I just had higher expectations after reading Bitten.
