The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks

by E. Lockhart

Disney Book Group | August 25, 2009 | Trade Paperback

Frankie Landau-Banks at age 14:
Debate Club.
Her father''s "bunny rabbit."
A mildly geeky girl attending a highly competitive boarding school.

Frankie Landau-Banks at age 15:
A knockout figure.
A sharp tongue.
A chip on her shoulder.
And a gorgeous new senior boyfriend: the supremely goofy, word-obsessed Matthew Livingston.

Frankie Landau-Banks.
No longer the kind of girl to take "no" for an answer.
Especially when "no" means she''s excluded from her boyfriend''s all-male secret society.
Not when her ex-boyfriend shows up in the strangest of places.
Not when she knows she''s smarter than any of them.
When she knows Matthew''s lying to her.
And when there are so many, many pranks to be done.

Frankie Landau-Banks, at age 16:
Possibly a criminal mastermind.

This is the story of how she got that way.

    Gruntling!

This is the first novel I've read by E. Lockhart, and I absolutely loved the style of writing! Frankie is a spunky, witty, and possibly insane protagonist, and although not all teens ACT like her, most can certainly RELATE to her.

Although I never saw how she could be so attracted to Matthew, I did get how she wanted to prove herself to the guys. Her antics are hilarious, and the words she "discovered" were delightful. A very fun read!

Frankie Landau-Banks is definitely a book for girls, but it's not your typical chick lit. The story is not about getting the guy - after all, Frankie gets him almost immediately - but about equality and identity within the relationship. At a larger scale, it incorporates feminism, psychology, and social commentary, not to mention a large dose of humour. Frankie is daring, smart, wholly admirable, and her infiltration of the secret boy's club was great fun to read. Highly recommended!

(The Chapters-Indigo website has been deleting my ratings so: I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars/leaves.)

This was a very good book for teens and young adults, which can also be enjoyed by older individuals (I'm not in the YA demographic).

While having a strong feminist theme, this book also touched on something which we all experience -i.e. do we give in or live up to our ideals? Frankie, in choosing to prove that she is more than a mere pretty face, chooses the second and pays the price.

Frankie's pranks are hilarious (In the Ladies we trust!) and the book does a good job of showing her growth as a (unique!) individual.

All in all therefore, it was a very well done book, and done in such a way as to amply satisfy its readers as well as to make them think. Very nice.

Similar recommended titles (given here because of the weird problems I've been having with the Chapters/Indigo website and which they STILL haven't fixed):

    -Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer
-The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins
    -Perfect Chemistry, by Suzanne Elkeles

Frankie left school as plain, scrawny, frizzy haired nobody, but came back a hot, curvy, babe! As she enters the world of the popular she starts having the time of her life, until she notices one problem: no one cares how smart she is anymore. As she begins to notcie a few other double standards she begins a plan that will break all the rules and possibly make her a legend, or get her expelled.
