Doubleday Canada | August 7, 2001 | Trade Paperback

It began in Scotland, at an ancient stone circle. There, a doorway, open to a select few, leads into the pastâ??or the grave. Claire Randall survived the extraordinary passage, not once buy twice. Her first trip swept her into the arms of Jamie Fraser, an eighteenth-century Scot whose love for her became legendâ??a tale of tragic passion that ended with her return to the present to bear his child. Her second journey, two decades later, brought them together again in frontier America. But Claire had left someone behind in the twentieth century. Their daughter Brianna...

Now, Brianna has made a disturbing discovery that sends her to the stone circle and a terrifying leap into the unknown. In search of her mother and the father she has never met, she is risking her own future to try to change history...and to save their lives. But as Brianna plunges into an uncharted wilderness, a heartbreaking encounter may strand her forever in the past...or root her in the place she should be, where her heart and soul belong...

Now I have read the previous books in the outlander series and they have all been great but Drums of Autumn was one that was very memorable, was packed with thrill and excitment, and i literally could not put the book down. I would totally recomend the whole series to read, and ecspecially this one.

This is the 4th book in the the series featuring Claire and Jamie. Claire is the time traveller and has gone back in time by 200 years to be with the one she loves. However this book, although very much about Claire and Jamie and the phase of their life which is about them making their home in America, is also very much about their daughter, Brianna.
Brianna decides to follow her mother back in time, and we get to know her and become familiar with her character.
Ultimately, I think that this book is too long. It is over 1000 pages, and I think that Gabaldon could focus more on the story and about giving us the excitement and adventure that has been so apealing with these books. Instead, she tries to be a "great writer" and constantly elaborates on the surroundings and on the minute details of her characters, which falls short of the mark. She is not a Steinbeck, and one sometimes gets the feeling that she is putting forth a lot of effort at creating these mesmerizing and unforgetable characters. Instead, her effect (on me, anyway) is to skim through her long descriptions that are not necessary. Ultimately if she were to expatiate less.....the book could be about 700 pages, which is far more acceptable.
Otherwise, I enjoyed the story. Brianna is alarmingly similar in character to her mother, and Gabaldon makes it almost painfully clear, that she resembles her father physically. One would think she is a freak with the amount of time she spends describing Brianna's large size.
I definitely think that this is not her best book, but if you have grown fond of Jamie and Claire....then reading this, along with the others in the series, is defintely a must.

    Oh so good!

Claire and Jamie are together at last. They have found themselves in the new world. Jamie is able to use his name as no one knows who he or she are. They will have a fresh start, and everything will be prefect as long as they are together. Well almost. Jamie has family here, and there are people that he was in jail with. Of course there are new things to worry about. Wild Indians and something called a skunk. Soon the couple are making choices as to the rest of the lives, but it soon becomes clear that nothing comes without strings. Claire and Jamie are still getting know each other after their 20 year separation, and Claire dearly misses Brianna. It makes Claire happy to know that she is safe 200 years in the future, or is she. Brianna wants to know her father and comes through the stones, and Roger follows Brianna.

Oh so good! This is a must read series.

Great ending to a good series. This book's focus is on Jamie and Claries 20 year old daughter. I fell in love with Roger and Brianna, and I recommend this book to all of Diana's fans.....What a smashing way to end the outlander series!!
