Dry: A Memoir

by Augusten Burroughs

Picador | April 1, 2004 | Trade Paperback

From the bestselling author of Running with Scissors comes Dry-the hilarious, moving, and no less bizarre account of what happened next.

You may not know it, but you''ve met Augusten Burroughs. You''ve seen him on the street, in bars, on the subway, at restaurants: a twenty-something guy, nice suit, works in advertising. Regular. Ordinary. But when the ordinary person had to drinks, Augusten was circling the drain by having twelve; when the ordinary person went home at midnight, Augusten never went home at all. Loud, distracting ties, automated wake-up calls, and cologne on the tongue could only hide so much for so long. At the request (well, it wasn''t really a request) of his employers, Augusten landed in rehab, where his dreams of group therapy with Robert Downey, Jr., are immediately dashed by the grim reality of fluorescent lighting and paper hospital slippers. But when Augusten is forced to examine himself, something actually starts to click, and that''s when he finds himself in the worst trouble of all. Because when his thirty days are up, he has to return to his same drunken Manhattan life-and live it sober. What follows is a memoir that''s as moving as it is funny, as heartbreaking as it is real. Dry is the story of love, loss, and Starbucks as a higher power.

i've always been a fan of Augusten Burroughs. He has a way of making a difficult situation seem managable and entertaining.
In this book we follow him through his addiction to alcohol (plus coke and crack) his trip to rehab and his search for a sober life. What makes this different than anyone elses memoir about addiction is his cynical and witty commentary on events that take place and the people in his life. From Pighead (his ex-boyfriend/best friend),to his asshole co-workers at the advertising firm hes working at. All of his characters are unique and easy to love or hate.
All in all this is an easy and enjoyable read about the modern struggle people face in order to find love for themselves and a sober life to live.

I loved this book. I first discovered Burroughs from the film Running With Scissors. I then read that book, followed by Dry. I had a hard time putting it down. He tells his story wih honesty and wit. It will speak to anyone who has struggled with their own demons.

If you have ever sunk into the bleak world of addiction .. or even if you have just been touched by someone who has , this book will take you on a voyage of discovery as it is magnificently spot-on in its imagery ,its asides of painful psyche-tickling and Augusten's savage yet lovable thoughts and self-conversations . It will cleverly grasp you by the throat and never let go. As impossible as Augusten's life may seem , he is able to bring it into a vividness that cannot be questioned. I sobbed exactly where Augusten sobbed .. I felt his every nuance and stab of remembrance.

Augusten Burroughs' journey doesn't end at childhood. In this memoir, he is grown up, living on his own, and is battling alcoholism. A great page turner. It is hard to believe how far one can fall. It is so interesting to see inside the head of someone who has gone through such lengths.

Great follow up to his first book on his childhood, this takes you right into his crazed drinking life and back again. A must read.

This book all-though appropriatly titled DRY, was so not dry it was wet with humour and once again the ups and downs of Augusten Burroughs. I read "Running With Scissors" first. Which is also Fantastic. DRY really does let you see the ins and outs of being an alcoholic. The day to day struggles of an addict. Some people think oh just change stop, as you read in this book it is just not that simple of a process. There is so much i want to say but it would give away all the good stuff. I will say though you will meet some interesting people in this book and really by time your done reading, you aswell as augusten will be attached to them. This book should of been the ultimate re-hab read instead of a certain other. Augusten Burroughs is vey real and genuine, his writing fantastic i recommend this book to all especially anyone fighting "demons" of any kind there is something for everyone in this excellent read.
"Pighead" (once you read you'll understand).

I haven't read a book this satisfying in a long time. I recommend reading his "Running with Scissors" before diving in to "Dry", but it is not necessary. This book stands on its own, and gives enough background so the reader is not left scratching their head at the mess that is his past. I really appreciate his views on choices, victimhood and how the two are not always related. Excellent read, I just ordered some more of his books! Very witty and well-written.

The voice Burroughs uses to tell his story is unique and witty. His story is compelling and a little heart breaking at the same time. This book didn't receive anywhere near the attenion a certain book by James Frey received, yet it is easily as compelling. I am a huge Burroughs fan and am inspired by how he turned his life around. You won't want to put this book down. It is astounding what people can endure. First, you need to read Running With Scissors and then you will begin to understand the obstacles he has overcome.

Burroughs’s humor never ceases to amaze me. It was so provocative yet so depressing. And I mean that all in a good way! From the first few pages, you’ll understand what he means and why he’s saying that! “Those F**** Eggs?” To DIE for! If I had my way with the world I’d make writers like Burroughs live ten lives so they could re-tell their stories in such a rich tale!
