by Frank Herbert

Berkley Trade | September 13, 1999 | Hardcover

Here, in a beautiful new hardcover edition, is the novel that to this day continues to shape modern science fiction. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, a world more awesome than any other in literature, Dune begins the story of the man known as Maud''dib -- and of a great family''s plan to bring to fruition humankind''s most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure, mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Frank Herbert''s death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

this is a must-read for sci-fi fans, one of my favorite books. I love the whole detailed world Frank Herbert has created.

I read this book because I was told it was Epic, life-altering, fantastic. What it was in my opinion was a huge disappointment. I enjoyed the story, and where they were going with it, and when the action was there it moved well. But overall I found it to be extremely dry and I felt my eyes sagging after a few pages. I forced myself through to the end, like a trooper, but I will never read it or its sequels anytime in the near future.

Actually I feel personally that the books only get better as you read them. The first novel is good but not the best in the series.

Frank Herbert creates a very deep and interesting vision of the future. A time when computers are outlawed, and the feudal system has returned. Mankind has spread across many planets, but one planet holds the key to power, Dune. Paul Atreides is a young man, just coming of age, and his family is taking over rule of Dune from their deadly enemies, the House Harkonnen.

This is not a simple and direct sci-fi story - indeed it offer many layers to be explored, and each reading draws you further into the world created by the author. This, the first in the 6 book series by Frank Herbert is by far the most accessible and likable. But for those who want more, there is a lot more, and as the series develops, things can at times get a little bizarre, but a fantastic story is always on offer.

A great read for anyone, whether you are new to sci-fi, or a veteran who has somehow not got around to this one yet.

I would also highly recommend another series by Frank Herbert, which includes "The Whipping Star" and the "Dosadi Experiment" for those who want more of his best.

One of *the* all time monumental classics in science fiction & fantasy. This work borders on the magnitude of Lord of the Rings. Follow a story of prophecy, sorrow, victory and intriguing plot twists; all presented at a depth seldom encountered in modern fiction. Excellent.

About the Author

Frank Herbert worked originally as a journalist, but then turned to science fiction. His Dune series has had a major impact on that genre. Some critics assert that Herbert is responsible for bringing in a new branch of ecological science fiction. He had a personal interest in world ecology, and consulted with the governments of Vietnam and Pakistan about ecological issues. The length of some of Herbert's novels also helped make it acceptable for science fiction authors to write longer books. It is clear that, if the reader is engaged by the story---and Herbert certainly has the ability to engage his readers---length is not important. As is usually the case with popular fiction, it comes down to whether or not the reader is entertained, and Herbert is, above all, an entertaining and often compelling writer. His greatest talent is his ability to create new worlds that are plausible to readers, in spite of their alien nature, such as the planet Arrakis in the Dune series.
