Each Peach Pear Plum

Janet and Allen Ahlberg's Each Peach Pear Plum is a delightful book that appeals both to children and adults. The book brings characters from several best-loved nursery rhymes and stories together in a ramble that winds around to bring them all together in a whimsical picnic at the end. This is an "I spy" book, making reading an active, challenging experience even for those who haven't yet learned to read the words;on each page, a particular character takes centre stage while others hide in the background inviting the young reader to point them out. Each character who appears suggests a new rhyme or story to be learned and discussed, or a familiar one to be remembered and repeated together. There is something comforting about Janet Ahlberg's drawings, but they are equally amusing, and as such, perfectly accompany Allen Ahlberg's funny, snappy, rhyming text. Although Chapters recommends this book for readers 4-8, this is my 16-month-old's favorite book at the moment, and mine too!
