Edge of hunger is the first of rhyannon byrd's primal instinct series.

Ian buchanan has always known that he was different because of his crazy mothers stories and the feeling deep in the pit of his stomach and of course his dreams where his inner monster is unleashed and it succumbs to their wildest desires, but lan keeps ignoring it he is determined to have a normal life, and all is going fairly well until molly stratton comes up his path and changes everything.

Molly says that she has been sent to find him and deliver a message from his mother, the thing is that his mom has been dead for the past 6 years so of course he doesnt believe her he thnks shes a con artist until she shows him the bite marks on her neck.

Ian is stunned into silence as molly tells him that she physically felt the dream he had of her, theway he took the way he took her over and over again in every way possible way before his fangs decended and fed off her.

When molly is finished teling the tale lan knows its true and that he is starting to turn into the monster the merrick, a merrick is a creature that i can only describe as half shifter and half vampire but not exactly either.

An enemy is near, that was the message from his mother and the enemy is a creature called a casus it is a dark scary as hell creature that takes a human host and survives on savagely killing women, but not before they rape them however a merrick is what they truly need and everytime a merrick is awakened its feasting time for a casus

Now that lan knows what he is and what he has to do he tries to stay away from molly, but it only weekens him, luckily he has the help of the watchmen, a group of lycan that "watch" the creatures of the otherworld. They teach him how to fight the casus using the cross but the only way to truly defect them is to let the merrick out and do that he must take the blood of his true love {molly} while inside her.

This was a great start to the series but it's not for the light hearted. There is a lot of talk of rape and murder of women something i really wish wasnt in this book.I would of have enjoyed it even more

Thank-you Jilly! I had recently added this series to my 'Plan To' pile but I think I will remove them as I am similarly not fond of sexual violence in the books I read.

I agree 1000000% with you there roger. Honestly I did read the rest of the series in hopes of no more rape talk but it was still there. I don't understand the need for people to write about rape expecially when the books are targeted towards women but just in general I think and hope that majority of people don't want to read about that stuff. I do not recommend books like these to people and I have actually written a letter to the author asking her view on it. But thanks for saying my review was good roger!! :)

Great review Jilly but I'll pass on this one. I just hate anything with rape in it.

The first book in the Primal Instinct series about the Buchanan family, three siblings who are unaware they have paranormal genes that are about to be awakened.
A good solid start to the series. Easy to read, with lots of steamy sexual tension. 85/1000

This book was better than I thought it was going to be. It's a story of good vs. evil, with a love story and you are addicted from chapter one!
Ian is a man who doesn't let himself get close to anyone and has been running from his past for a very long time. When Molly comes looking for him to give him a message from his dead mother, he knows he is in trouble from the minute he takes a look at her and throughout the book he won't admit to his feelings for her and either pushes her away or he himself runs to get away from her.
Molly has been communicating with the dead for many years but when Ian's mother contacts her, she has to act. When she does find Ian, he is stubborn and she has to argue with him at every turn and she realizes that his past has caught up to him, and she is the only one who can help him awaken the creature inside him to save everyone.
This series looks to be great!
