The Eerie Silence: Renewing Our Search for Alien Intelligence

by Paul Davies

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt | April 7, 2010 | Hardcover

Fifty years ago, a young astronomer named Frank Drake pointed a radio telescope at nearby stars in the hope of picking up a signal from an alien civilization. Thus began one of the boldest scientific projects in history, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). But after a half century of scanning the skies, astronomers have little to report but an eerie silence-eerie because many scientists are convinced that the universe is teeming with life. The problem, argues the leading physicist and astrobiologist Paul Davies, is that we''ve been looking in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and in the wrong way. Davies should know. For more than three decades, he has been closely involved with SETI and now chairs the SETI Post-Detection Taskgroup, charged with deciding what to do if we''re confronted with evidence of alien intelligence. In this extraordinary book, he shows how SETI has lost its edge and offers a new and exciting road map for the future.

Davies believes our search so far has been overly anthropocentric: we tend to assume an alien species will look, think, and behave like us. He argues that we need to be far more expansive in our efforts, and in this book he completely redefines the search, challenging existing ideas of what form an alien intelligence might take, how it might try to communicate with us, and how we should respond if we ever do make contact. A provocative and mind-expanding journey, The Eerie Silence will thrill fans of science and science fiction alike.

Are we alone in the universe? Does life exist on others planets? How about intelligent life? If it does exist, then how did it come about? Could we detect its presence? Could we communicate with such beings? Would they even be interested in communicating with us? These are just a few of the many questions that the author, a well-known theoretical physicist and chair of a SETI committee, addresses in this mind-boggling book. After discussing such numerous questions, the results of which may be rather discouraging for some, he addresses the “new SETI” program which, he points out, “shifts the emphasis away from seeking messages for mankind using radio telescopes to the less ambitious goal of simply trying to identify signatures of intelligence through the impact that alien technology makes on the astronomical environment”. The issues presented in this book are numerous and truly imaginative. After discussing all these ideas, the author arrives at the scientific conclusion that intelligent life on other planets in the observable universe is highly unlikely. Despite this, he provides reasons why the SETI program should be continued. The writing style is clear, authoritative, accessible and widely imaginative. This book can be enjoyed by anyone, although those who have hope for the existence of intelligent life beyond earth may be in for a bit of a disappointment.

In addition to his many scientific awards, he is the recipient of the 1995 Templeton Prize-the world''s largest annual prize-for his work on science and religion. He is the author of more than twenty books, including "The Mind of God," "About Time," "The Origin of Life," and "How to Build a Time Machine." He also chairs the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence postdetection committee, so that if SETI succeeds in finding intelligent life, he will be among the first to know.
