Will Reid is a gawky kid who wears fake turtlenecks, is obsessed by his ant farm project, and is lousy at gym. In other words, he''s the perfect target for Shane, the Grade 9 bully. Katie has been Will''s friend in elementary school, but defending him in the high school environment comes at an unforeseen cost - she dreads the rumours that link them in a boyfriend/girlfriend way she''s never considered. Devan has been part of Shane''s bullyboy team until now, when he comes to realize that it''s not so smart to mindlessly back up each nasty attack of Shane''s. Together the three young teens are struggling to find their way out of one of the classic dilemmas of life: how not to be a bystander to bullying, how to stand up for your friends, and how to deal with consuming rage.

Young readers will find lots to think about as they turn the pages of this crisp and compelling story by newcomer Caroline Pignat. Each character takes a turn at telling the story -- through the spare blank verse of Will, wrapped up in the world of his single-parent father and his own eccentric preoccupations; through the clear-eyed accounts of Katie, wrestling with her own private demons; and in the sensitive narrative of the slowly awakening Devan, who comes to notice Katie as a spunky, attractive individual whom he''d like to know better but fears thinks he''s a goof.

Note that Kids Help Phone''s has included Egghead on their site as a book to help kids in their Get Information section under Bullying for Ages 13 and Up.

This book was okay. Not the very best and not the worst. It was abit of a story to tell people the effects of bullying. Also the events sometimes do go by too fast. But other than that it was pretty good. There were some surprises and twists. All and all I liked it and might reccomend it to somepeople.

This has to be the best bullying book ever! This isn't written by some balding man trying to understand teenagers. This isn't a scenario made up by people sitting behind a desk all day but what kids really do and why they do it. Everyone has been one of the three people, victim, bystander, and supporter and all three perspectives. I am starting to think that Corline Pignat isn't the writer but three real teenagers. The Katie and Devan perspectives are great but wills short little scenarios make you see the irony in everything. Please read this no matter who you are.

I loved this book! It was really sad and i felt so bad for "egghead". In the end i guess it ended well. I loved it and i loved how she wrote it from two perspectives! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I would read it again anyday!

Every parent should ask the children in their family to read this book - or read it to them - a heartwarming and valuable story.

As a grandmother of primary school age children, I appreciate that a book like this that deals with the problem of bullying does so in a format that is beautifully written. The poetry is sensitive and finely crafted; the language is age-appropriate. It will stretch the reading muscles of the grades 4 to 6 kids without turning off older readers (like me). Well done Caroline!

A note to publishers - sign up this young woman PDQ. She'll be a gold mine for you.

    Suprisingly Good Story

I started out sceptical about this whole story, I mean an ant farm? Please. But, as I started to read, I realised that the voices of the characters sounded real and the overall emotions of the book didn't seem fake or patheticly overused. So I thought, but then again mayby not, maybe this book is worthwhile. Although the end is a little corny and the ant farm is kinda strange, this book is a great read for anyone who's looking for something good to read. Does that sound repiticious to you?

I loved this book. Each character became real and alive. I felt I was walking with them throughout their day. You could see the need in each person. This book can be an excellent tool for anyone wanting to start a discussion about bullying. I highly recommend this read for any age, but especially young people. As a Grandparent, I encourage other grandparents to read this book. Thank you Caroline.

I would highly recommend this book for the young teens (and pre-teens) on your Christmas list! This book is written from such an interesting perspective. You can actually get into the head of all the major characters! This is unlike anything else we've read.

This is a great book. It is a very finely crafted story. I highly recommend it.
Although it was written with a teen audience in mind, the craftsmanship shown in its writing makes it a great read no matter what your age.
