Eldest

by Christopher Paolini

Random House Children's Books | March 13, 2007 | Trade Paperback

Darkness falls…despair abounds…evil reigns…

Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in the skills of the Dragon Rider: magic and swordsmanship. Soon he is on the journey of a lifetime, his eyes open to awe-inspring new places and people, his days filled with fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and nothing is what it seems. Before long, Eragon doesn't know whom he can trust.

Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle-one that might put Eragon in even graver danger.

Will the king's dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life. . . .

It's a nice continuation to the story. Moves a little slow at times, but still an enjoyable read.

    Definitely an Improvement!

This second installment of the inheritance cycle is definitely an improvement over the first book. Paolini actually managed to throw in some surprising twists in there to grip the readers in. But that only happened near the second half of Eldest.

    Addictive

I wasn't too fond of Eragon, but I decided to stick with the series, and am quite glad I did.
Eldest continues to prove that Paolini is influenced by Tolkein, as the second book in the Inheritance Cycle mimics the Two Towers by following three separate plotlines: Eragon, the Varden, and Roran. It was actually the development of Roran's character that made the book so addictive to me.
Although it was a little bit predictable in terms of plot twists, Paolini writes so well that, although you predicted the outcome within the first few chapters of the story, the journey there is so engaging that you cheer over having figured them out, rather than becoming disappointed at what could have otherwise been a contrived plot.

About the Author

Christopher Paolini's abiding love of fantasy and science fiction inspired him to begin writing his debut novel, Eragon, when he graduated from high school at fifteen after being homeschooled all his life. Both Eragon and Eldest, the second book in the Inheritance cycle, became instant New York Times bestsellers. Christopher is currently at work on Brisingr, the third volume in the cycle. He lives in Montana, where the dramatic landscape feeds his visions of Alagaësia.
