Eldest: Inheritance, Book II

by Christopher Paolini

Random House Children's Books | August 23, 2005 | Hardcover

Darkness falls…despair abounds…evil reigns…

Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in the skills of the Dragon Rider: magic and swordsmanship. Soon he is on the journey of a lifetime, his eyes open to awe-inspring new places and people, his days filled with fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and nothing is what it seems. Before long, Eragon doesn't know whom he can trust.

Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle-one that might put Eragon in even graver danger.

Will the king's dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life. . . .

I really liked these books. It s been a while since i last read them but since i have seen so many reviews saying that he copied this or that i had to write my opinion of it. This is his first series and that he actually put this world together from different things he had read or seen is amazing. This is not your typical 300 page book this is a great adventure. I liked this one as much if not even more than the first. He added his touch to fantasy worlds that many authors borrow.I have not read the third installment yet but will get to it. Now the idea of a fourth might be pushing it. He should have finished this one and tried something completly different to show us he truly deserves to be up there with the big boys.

A fantasy book with action from beginning to end, Eldest is a book like no other. It is the second book in the in the four book inheritance series and is packed with twice the action and unbelievable twists that are sure to keep anyone on the edge of their seats. With dragons, wars, and mystical spells, this book is breathtaking and exciting.
Eldest flips between two characters, Eragon and Roran, with major conflicts in their lives it is impossible to find a boring part.
Christopher Paolini captures your imagination throughout every part of this fine novel.

My brother loves this book but personally I couldn't stand it. I got through about 100 pages before I started to doze off while reading it. Eragon captivates your attention but Eldest is terrible. I am not planning on buying Brisingr, so I don't know if this series will deteriorate more than it already has...

Well actually more, it was great! and i am so excited to hear not only with there be a third but now a forth to make this the inheritance cycle! im so excited. This book kept me reading late into the nights forgeting and not worrieing about my early alarm clock. (i even missed a morning of school to finish this book) a sad ending with so many questions left to be answered and i cant wait! --I love Saphiras character! she is one of my favorites--

This is a really big book and has a lot of boring moments. But along with that there are many adventurous things happening at the same time.

I agree entirely, except with the rating you gave it. I would have given it at most a three. Your review is accurate, however. It is a big book, make us want to read it, not want to fall asleep with it on our chests.

The first book was bad enough. We can only blame his parents for publishing it.
The second book is full of words and ideas stollen from other books. The main character has a 'battle wound' that causes him pain and bad feelings with all 5 senses. The teacher that teaches the main character is smack out of The Karate Kid.
Children who like the book, will not have read Dungeons and Dragons. Even the name of the Saphiras mother is from Harry Potter.
In the beginning of the audio book Christopher thanks his parents, and he should thank them, as I doubt no one else would publish what he writes.
Not worth the read nor the money.

I concur. i found that the entire story was boring, and picked up only neat the end, for less than ten pages. I literally fell asleep while reading this in the middle of the day, and I cannot see why anybody would like this. The first book I loved. However, I agree with this anonymous figure that it is a copy from many things.

    Ragnar

Yes the karate kid was the originator of the master/student relationship... are you serious!!!! As for Saphira's mothers name - Vervada - where in harry potter did you ever read that??? The battle scar was actually quite interesting. It helped to develop the character of Eragon, he had to learn to deal with pain and a disability. Great book.

    K. Bomb

Are you serious, Ragnar? Great Book? Ha! There are so many copies in this book it's not funny. Plus, some of it is really lame. Galbatorix? Sounds like like a computer part. "Hook up the Galbatorix"...lame. Secondly, who names a Dragon Saphira? Like, hello! Do you want a powerful Dragon to be called Saphira? Sounds like the name of one of Malibu barbie's friends. Call her Inferno or something cool like that, not Saphira. One big copy in this book, Ragnar, is this: Who is the main character in the book? Eragon. Who is a major character in Lord of the Rings? Aragorn. Take away the "R" from Aragorn and you are exactly the same sound. It doesn't take a genius to figure this stuff out.

Christopher Paolini's second installment in the Inheritance series, Eldest, is eloquently written and has a well-constucted plot that keeps the reader hooked throughout. Although the book is in the 600s page range, I was able to whiz through it in no time, due to the fact that it was so exciting. I just could not put it down! In book 2 of this series, readers follow Eragon as he continues his venture to destroy the Empire, led by the evil Galbatorix. Eragon journeys to Ellsemera to meet The Mourning Sage/ The Cripple Who is Whole, and he rapidly completes his training. As readers are enticed, we witness Eragon trying to overcome numerous barriers, and striving to serve his cause as best he can. Engrossing and action-packed, Eragon's story is a magical one of love, war, action, and lots of drama. But at the same time, we also get a glimpse at another quest taking place in Algaesia, this one belonging to Roran, Eragon's long-forgotten cousin. As Roran fights for his village and protects the whole town of Carvahall, readers can't help but notice the uncanny resemblance between Roran and Eragon when it comes to strength, willpower, and leadership skills. While the battle against the Empire escalates to the mighty village of Surda, Eragon realizes that he is needed there. So he summons all the power he possesses and together, with his dragon Saphira, they embark on one of their most treacherous journeys yet to face. Upon arrival, they face battles fiercer than ever before and draw upon magical powers stronger than they have ever known. As Eragon's story crosses paths with Roran's, readers will be drawn to love, admire, and indulge in Christopher Paolini's masterpiece of a tale. Eldest definitely surpasses Eragon in integrity of plot and adrenaline rush; I assure you, you won't be disappointed. In fact you'll be on the edge of your seat and waiting for the much-anticipated release of the third installment in the Inheritance series.

One of the two best books I've ever read, both written by Paolini. rarely took my hand off it except in gym class and sometimes I read in gym class. (ask any of my friends)
Sad at the end... PAOLINI, YOU BETTER DO A GOOD JOB ON THE THIRD ONE CAUSE WE'RE WATCHING YOU. Can't wait till the next book comes out.

I'll admit, when I first read Eldest I thought it was an absolutely amazing story. Creative description, suspense, action, adventure, a hint of romance, and a surprising twist to the story at the end (I know how annoying it is when people give away parts of the book!) However, as some other critics and reviewers have said "There is quite a bit of co-incidental instances in the book, such as names, places, that sort of stuff. Through and through, I would recommend this novel to booklovers and couch-potatoes alike. Excellent work Mr.Paolini but try to be a bit more creative with your names and such next time!

    A MUST READ

The second book in the inheritance trilogy and a must read. After reading Eragon i rushed to the book store to buy Eldest. I just couldnt put it down ! My friends asking me to come outside that day but i absolutely refused because i wasnt done the book. My parents couldnt understand why their thirteen year old daughter would rather stay inside and read then go outside with her friends! Christopher paolini is one of my favourite authors and his books are a must have edition to your bookself! Some features are similar to Lord of the Rings, but this has a twist that keeps you reading. Some parts of the book are so exciting! There is never a time in the book when i wasnt interested. The way that christopher paolini described the setting was magical and made me feel as if i was there. I cant wait for the third and final book in the trilogy. The way that christopher paolini ended this book was perfect. It left so much unsaid which made you want to read the next book to find out what happens. Will Roran and Eragon scale helengrind and save katrina? Will Eragon defeat Galbatroix or die in one last battle? Will the last egg hatch? Will the Razac finally be destroyed? WILL THE DRAGONS BE REBORN? All will be ansaered in book three of inheritance.

This book is outstanding, continuing the story started in Eragon. Similar to LOTR, but not too close, this book weaves a tale of fantasy, the Dragon Riders, Elves, Dwarves and the war against King Galbatorix. Filled with outstanding plot twists and surprises, this book is again one for all ages. If you enjoyed Eragon, I strongly recommend this book!
