Emma

by AUSTEN JANE

July 9, 2009 | Hardcover

Beautiful, clever, rich - and single - Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage. Nothing, however, delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected. With its imperfect but charming heroine and its subtle exploration of relationships, "Emma" is Jane Austen's most witty and flawless novel.

This is a timeless classic. A girl who has it all gets put in her place even though she is trying to improve other people's lives. Instead of letting the cards fall she tries to intervene and find things out about her own life.

Emma has no intention of ever marrying and she considers herself a very good matchmaker amongst her friends. Of course, she is not nearly as good a matchmaker as she thinks she is and manages to mess up a few times and she misses seeing things between people.

I was hoping for more. I liked parts of it, but my mind wandered throughout a lot of the book, too. It seemed if the focus was on particular characters (Harriet, Frank Churchill, sometimes Mr. Knightley), it kept my attention a bit more. I was interested at the start and at the end, and when the aforementioned characters were involved in the storyline, but otherwise, I got a bit bored at times and couldn't always pay attention to it.

Emma Woodhouse is the main character of Jane Austen's novel Emma. The novel concentrates mainly on Emma and her life. Throughout the novel, Emma exempts herself from marriage and romance in order to assert her independence. Of course by the end of the novel Emma herself decides to get married just like the other characters in this novel. Her reasons for not getting married are the fact that she is wealthy enough not to require a husband to support herself, and she is so attached to her father that she does not long to leave his house. Although convinced that she herself will never marry, she takes it upon herself to persuade Harriet Smith, a younger friend, into a potential gentleman's wife. She sets her sights on Mr. Elton, the vicar, one of Highbury's most eligible bachelors. She leads Harriet away from Robert Martin, a well-to-do farmer, who is infatuated by Harriet. Harriet rejects Martin's proposal and becomes infatuated with Mr. Elton under Emma's encouragement, but Emma's plans go wrong when Elton makes it clear that she herself is the true object of his affections. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading for lengthy period of times.

Unbelievable as it may seem, this book is a jaw-dropping rip off of the Alicia Silverstone movie Clueless!!! The plot similarities are too many to list but suffice it to say this Jane Austen author has taken Clueless's story of a girl in LA and set it in Victorian England. Shame shame did Austen think anyone wouldn't notice?!? Is this Austen person going to rip off the plot of Bill & Ted's excellent adventure next and set it during the Boer war? Gimme a break Austen!

I find your comment hilarious seeing as Emma was published in 1815 and Jane Austen herself died in 1817

You do know that the movie Clueless was BASED ON EMMA. I am pretty sure the back of the movie case even says that.

Emma is quite possibly the most verbose and tedious book I have ever read. I will give Jane Austen credit for her ability to turn a relatively simple story into a 400 page "epic." Had it not been required reading I wouldn't have finished it. The story line is sweet and romantic but I found the book to be horrendously long and painful to sit through.

I just finished reading this amazing book by Jane Austin. The story can get a little confusing at first, but I had seen both the movie "Emma" (starring Gwyenth Paltrow, I believe) and I also saw Clueless, (the 90's version of Emma). Even if you havn't seen the movies, this book is definitly a good read for lovers of English fiction and/or Jane Austin.
