Emma

by Jane Austen

Oxford University Press | December 1, 1970 | Hardcover

Emma (1816) is Jane Austen''s most characteristic work. Convinced that she understands the world, Emma rules over her invalid father and the small social circle of Highbury with well-meaning tyranny. But she is highly fallible where love is concerned, and her failings there cause many misunderstandings - as well as giving the reader much enjoyment as order is restored. In her new introduction to this edition Terry Castle examines the pleasure given by Emma''s reassuringly stable world and by its comedy, and examines the relationships, imagery, and continuing power of Austen''s perhaps greatest novel.

This is a timeless classic. A girl who has it all gets put in her place even though she is trying to improve other people's lives. Instead of letting the cards fall she tries to intervene and find things out about her own life.

I was hoping for a bit more.

Emma has no intention of ever marrying and she considers herself a very good matchmaker amongst her friends. Of course, she is not nearly as good a matchmaker as she thinks she is and manages to mess up a few times and she misses seeing things between people.

I was hoping for more. I liked parts of it, but my mind wandered throughout a lot of the book, too. It seemed if the focus was on particular characters (Harriet, Frank Churchill, sometimes Mr. Knightley), it kept my attention a bit more. I was interested at the start and at the end, and when the aforementioned characters were involved in the storyline, but otherwise, I got a bit bored at times and couldn't always pay attention to it.

Emma Woodhouse is the main character of Jane Austen's novel Emma. The novel concentrates mainly on Emma and her life. Throughout the novel, Emma exempts herself from marriage and romance in order to assert her independence. Of course by the end of the novel Emma herself decides to get married just like the other characters in this novel. Her reasons for not getting married are the fact that she is wealthy enough not to require a husband to support herself, and she is so attached to her father that she does not long to leave his house. Although convinced that she herself will never marry, she takes it upon herself to persuade Harriet Smith, a younger friend, into a potential gentleman's wife. She sets her sights on Mr. Elton, the vicar, one of Highbury's most eligible bachelors. She leads Harriet away from Robert Martin, a well-to-do farmer, who is infatuated by Harriet. Harriet rejects Martin's proposal and becomes infatuated with Mr. Elton under Emma's encouragement, but Emma's plans go wrong when Elton makes it clear that she herself is the true object of his affections. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading for lengthy period of times.

I just finished reading this amazing book by Jane Austin. The story can get a little confusing at first, but I had seen both the movie "Emma" (starring Gwyenth Paltrow, I believe) and I also saw Clueless, (the 90's version of Emma). Even if you havn't seen the movies, this book is definitly a good read for lovers of English fiction and/or Jane Austin.

From the Jacket

''3 or 4 Families in a Country Village is the very thing to work on'', Jane Austen wrote, in September 1814, to a niece with literary ambitions. The advice undoubtedly reflected Jane Austen''s satisfaction with her own work in progress, a novel in which the village of Highbury provides the setting for the moral and emotional education of Emma Woodhouse, a heroine ''handsome, clever, and rich'' but spoiled by ''the power of having rather too much her own way and a disposition to think a little too well of herself''.

About the Author

Jane Austen's life is striking for the contrast between the great works she wrote in secret and the outward appearance of being quite dull and ordinary. Austen was born in the small English town of Steventon in Hampshire, and educated at home by her clergyman father. She was deeply devoted to her family. For a short time, the Austens lived in the resort city of Bath, but when her father died, they returned to Steventon, where Austen lived until her death at the age of 41. Austen was drawn to literature early, she began writing novels that satirized both the writers and the manners of the 1790's. Her sharp sense of humor and keen eye for the ridiculous in human behavior gave her works lasting appeal. She is at her best in such books as Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816), in which she examines and often ridicules the behavior of small groups of middle-class characters. Austen relies heavily on conversations among her characters to reveal their personalities, and at times her novels read almost like plays. Several of them have, in fact, been made into films.
