The Empowered Investor: A Guide To Building Better Portfolios

by Keith Matthews

May 1, 2005 | Trade Paperback

The call from Canadians from coast-to-coast for a clearly written, intelligent guide-book on investment and portfolio management has been heard by Keith Matthews, author of The Empowered Investor: A Guide to Building Better Portfolios. The book is free of jargon and hype and is a straightforward guide devoted to the average Canadian's wish for easily accessible information on leading-edge portfolio management concepts.

In this engaging guide on wise investing, Keith Matthews appeals to novices and experts alike. His accessible style has produced a very rare find: an easy-to-read finance and portfolio management book that is a down-to-earth treatment of a complex subject.

Readers will find:

  • a review of traditional investment advice and its pitfalls
  • a debunking of investment myths
  • investment truths every savvy investor should be aware of
  • straightforward and practical principles to help them become better investors
It is the first Canadian-authored book to highlight the research-based Fama-French, 3-Factor model. More than any other deciding factors (such as market predictions, investment TV shows, investment manager strategies, investment newsletters, hot trendy ideas, etc.), this three-factor model helps inform investors and advisors where returns actually come from, and it has revolutionized the way Canadians are now able to construct asset allocation and portfolio strategies.

A Gem of a Book

Keith Christopher

I found this book to be a gem. It was a pleasure to read and the information was clear and most enlightening. Having an interest in statistics and probabilities, I found the recommendations about asset class investing and the Fama/French 3-factor for investing most convincing.

I liked the metaphors that were used; they helped make the principles and key ideas easily understandable. I found the references to research, throughout the book, and to the history of portfolio theory and investment management breakthroughs, at the end of the book, most informative. I also found the annotated bibliography of recommended books most helpful.

In short, I found this to be the best little book I have read about investing and recommend it to anyone who wants to see their money grow.
