Ender's Game

by Orson Scott Card
Read by: Stefan Rudnicki, Harlan Ellison

Macmillan Audio | November 6, 2004 | Audio Book (CD)

Winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards

In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race''s next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn''t make the cut-young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Ender''s skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.

Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender''s two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives.

Ender''s Game is the winner of the 1985 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the 1986 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

    Ender's Game

I received this book as a gift but then wondered how in the world did it go unnoticed for so long! Amazingly believable futuristic settings from the great American science fiction author published in apparently two different times, the second one being the one we read. Modern and contemporary battleship of moral and ethical issues intertwined in an exhilarating story line so entrenched in human condition, a must read. I think it should be incorporated in school itineraries like J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye.

A must read! Ender gets made fun of and beaten up for being a third born. He is brought to a battle school with the most intelligent kids in the world and everyone is determined that he will be the one to defeat a dangerous alien race. Being pushed past his limit by teachers, friends, and enemies, Ender is tricked into defeating the aliens known as the buggers. I certainly loved this book and recommend it to anyone who appreciates any genre. I advise that this story is mainly suitable for teenagers and adults. This book is a brilliant story of perseverance, friendship, and courage. I could not put it down to brush my teeth!

About the Author

Born in Richland, Washington in 1951, Orson Scott Card grew up in California, Arizona, and Utah. He lived in Brazil for two years as an unpaid missionary for the Mormon Church and received degrees from Brigham Young University (1975) and the University of Utah (1981). The author of numerous books, Card was the first writer to receive both the Hugo and Nebula awards for best novel two years in a row, first for Ender''s Game and then for the sequel Speaker for the Dead. He lives in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Harlan Ellison has written or edited 75 books and more than 1700 stories, essays, articles, and newspaper columns as well as two dozen teleplays and a dozen motion pictures.  He won the Hugo award nine times, the Nebula award three times, the Bram Stoker award six times (including The Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996), the Edgar Allan Poe Award of the Mystery Writers of America twice, the Georges Méliès fantasy film award twice, and was awarded the Silver Pen for Journalism by PEN, the international writer's union. Harlan has garnered two Audie Awards for the best in audio recordings.  Along with Stefan Rudnicki and other narrators, Harlan read the 20th anniversary edition of Orson Scott Card''s Ender''s Game, published by Macmillan Audio.

Stefan Rudnicki was born in Poland and now resides in Studio City, California. He has narrated more than 100 audiobooks, and has participated in more than a thousand as a narrator, writer, producer, or director. He is a recipient of multiple Audie Awards and AudioFile Earphones Awards as well as a Grammy Award as an audiobook producer. Along with casts of other narrators, Stefan has read a number of Orson Scott Card''s best-selling science fiction novels, published by Macmillan Audio. In reviewing the 20th anniversary edition audiobook of Card's Ender''s Game, Publishers Weekly stated, "Card''s phenomenal emotional depth comes through in the quiet, carefully paced speech of each performer...In particular, Rudnicki, with his lulling, sonorous voice, does a fine job articulating Ender''s inner struggle between the kind, peaceful boy he wants to be and the savage, violent actions he is frequently forced to take. This is a wonderful way to experience Card''s best-known and most celebrated work, both for longtime fans and for newcomers."
