The Enforcer: Johnny 'Pops' Papalia: A Life and Death in the Mafia

by Adrian Humphreys

Harper Collins | May 1, 2000 | Trade Paperback

The story of Johnny "Pops" Papalia is the story of the Mafia in Canada. It is a story that begins and ends on the same, small, working-class street in Hamilton, Ontario, where Johnny Pops was born and where he was shot dead at the age of 73. This book is the dramatic account of his bloody rise to power, his rocky tenure as the most powerful Mafia boss in Canada, his connections with the New York mob, and his inevitable gangland slaying. Few Canadians have lived a life so large and so violent.

This is without a doubt the best book on the Canadian Mafia ever written and believe me I think I've read them all! It has great pacing and reads like a novel or movie but tells the true story with authentic feel without getting bogged down in millions of names and dates and rumours. It is a nice blend of the view of the mob from both the inside and from others on the outside looking in, like cops and regular citizens. This is a highly recommended read and not just for those interested in the mob and crime stuff. My wife read it too and loved it.

This book was a great read. Gripped my attention right to the end. The local colour was especially appreciated. Facts were accurate, but surprising insights fascinating. I recommend this book as a great summer read.

I got the hardcover out from the library and thought that was great, now I bought the paperback so I could have some of the photographs and find the book has been all updated and expanded. New stuff about the trial of those charged with Papalia's murder, new stories about Johnny's life. Bigger, better, a really good job. I recommend it highly.

From Our Editors

While Al Capone was claiming he didn`t know what street Canada was on, Johnny `Pops` Papalia was founding his own criminal empire from Hamilton. By the time he was gunned down at the age of 73, his massive crime network earned him the moniker `Canada`s Capone.` Filled with tales of extortion, loan sharking, gambling and heroin, The Enforcer chronicles the rise and fall of this country`s most successful Mafia don. Crime reporter Adrian Humphreys long association with the criminal world and international enforcement agencies pays rich dividends in the sources he is able to call on for this book. With half a century of police files and interviews with Papalia`s friends, rivals and enemies, The Enforcer has all the excitement of a Hollywood movie while still being as Canadian as maple syrup.
