Enforcer Rev Ed: Johnny Pops Papalia: A Life and Death in the Mafia

by Adrian Humphreys

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd | December 16, 2004 | Trade Paperback

DURING HIS LIFETIME, Johnny Pops Papalia was known as Canada’s Capone, Godfather and The Enforcer. Part Mafia Don, part gentleman and part shrewd businessman, Johnny Pops was assassinated at age 73. The Enforcer became crime writer Adrian Humphreys’ bestselling look at this colourful and influential crime boss. Six years after Johnny Pops’ murder, public fascination with the Papalia family continues unabated—and there have been several surprising developments since his demise.

• What has happened to the Musitano brothers, who are now eligible for parole after being convicted of conspiracy to commit Johnny Papalia’s murder?
• How is Kenneth Murdock, the other accused, spending his time in prison? And what new information can he offer?
• What has happened to the Papalia clan, especially since the aggressive entry of the Hells Angels into Ontario’s underworld?
• And what do the police now have to say about their investigation and prosecution of Papalia’s killers?

With his vast knowledge of the North American organized crime network and his relentless tracking of this still-unfolding story, Humphreys answers these questions and more in this fully revised edition. A true-crime classic in every sense, The Enforcer is an absorbing read for any fan.

    Essential reading

This is without a doubt the best book on the Canadian Mafia ever written and believe me I think I've read them all! It has great pacing and reads like a novel or movie but tells the true story with authentic feel without getting bogged down in millions of names and dates and rumours. It is a nice blend of the view of the mob from both the inside and from others on the outside looking in, like cops and regular citizens. This is a highly recommended read and not just for those interested in the mob and crime stuff. My wife read it too and loved it.

This book was a great read. Gripped my attention right to the end. The local colour was especially appreciated. Facts were accurate, but surprising insights fascinating. I recommend this book as a great summer read.

I got the hardcover out from the library and thought that was great, now I bought the paperback so I could have some of the photographs and find the book has been all updated and expanded. New stuff about the trial of those charged with Papalia's murder, new stories about Johnny's life. Bigger, better, a really good job. I recommend it highly.
