Enter Alypium, a hidden world within our own where our old knowledge of magic is kept, and strange and fantastical creatures abound. It is a beautiful and mystical place, but things are caving in. The king is hypnotized and his castle turned on its side. The very Substance that holds our planet together has gone awry, and whispers tell of evil plans to destroy everything. Twelve year old Erec Rex has been yanked out of our world and thrown unwillingly into danger here. As he learns how to get by in this strange place, he discovers some truths about himself, and must learn the power of trust and love in order to save his mother, and all of Alypium. In this riveting tale packed with action, humor, and a colorful cast of characters, debut author Kaza Kingsley brings us into a land of danger and excitement. For Erec, it is a world that is eerily familiar and inevitably entwined with his future. To the reader, it is a fantastic escape that shall be taken again and again.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from fantabulously clever My favourite pre-teen fantasy of the year. Kaza Kingsley's characters are 9D and the world she has created is brilliant. The first few paragraphs outlining Erec being woken up by his magic alarm clock, and then having his teeth brushed by his toothbrush had us all chuckling and in the mood for more, more, more. Thankfully, there is more: this series, loosely based on the Labours of Hercules, is supposed to have 8 in the set. We are desperately awaiting book 4 (this is book one), due out August 2010. Enjoy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great beginning to a brilliant series Smart, funny, moral, interesting, exciting, innovative, clever, silly, complex and brilliant are words I would use to describe this largely undiscovered book/ series. Though geared for older kids (the main character Erec, is 12/ 13), my 5 and 7 year old and I REALLY enjoyed the audiobook read by the fantastic Simon Jones. The first few paragraphs had us all in hysterics with the funny description of being awoken by a magical alarm clock and toothbrush. And it just gets better. There are dragons, quests, brilliant villians, riddles, and intrigue in this captivating read. The series is loosely based on the labours of Hercules, which could be why it has such depth to it. Not to be missed. Better than HP.
