America, in the distant future. The world that once was has been decimated by the plague. Orphans were enrolled into schools and on the eve (hah.) of Eve’s graduation from an all-girl’s school, she discovers the actual horrifying fate of the new graduates. She escapes and her life is forever altered, now a disillusioned girl on the run. Eve and another student who managed to escape set out to Califia, a far-off distant land that they know to be a safe haven. Along the way, they meet Caleb, a boy living in the wild with other males. Eve wants to trust him but her brainwashed upbringing, that all men are evil, keep nagging at her. When the King’s troops start hunting for them, Eve must make some tough decisions in order to survive. Perhaps I wasn’t in the mood for another “mysterious school withholding information from the students” type of book – and granted, that premise isn’t the main plot of the book – but Eve took me a little while to get into. I liked that Carey kept the King in the City of Sand and the reason why Eve was being hunted a mystery. It made me want to keep reading, to find out what the “meaning of life” was to them. I also enjoyed the subtleties that Carey brought to this dystopian narrative. Eve scrounges for food and tosses aside a $100 bill, showing the lack of relevance for money in a world that knows no paper currency. Nothing about the title character made her particularly likable to me though. She’s sheltered, confused and selfish – made all the more evident in a pivotal scene of the book. However, it was that selfish moment that finally got me on board with the story. That climactic scene propels the otherwise stagnating narrative to an emotionally gut-wrenching ending that sets it up for the sequel. The finale of this book isn’t necessarily a cliffhanger, as I could see it as a standalone in a way, but it opens up the possibilities of more story development. For a while now, since early January I've been wanting to get a hold of this book. Every blog that I've seen this book on really liked it. I was so happy when I won a chance to get this book from the Book depository! I actually dropped a werewolf book I was reading to read this. Which is surprising because to me werewolf books come before any other genera. I was so glad though that I've read this book, it was great and surprising. I never knew what was going to be next and that's what I liked most about the series. The Character Eve, she is just a normal girl attending school until she learn the horrible truth about it. She loves her friends and always talks about them though out the book. She's brave despite her situation in how she grew up and being mostly by herself when she meets Caleb. Caleb is such a sweet boy, the way the book describes him is that he's really cute, though I never liked a guy with dreads . . . haha. He's so a boy when he leaves Eve after a miss understanding but you can see how much he loves her when he comes back. Arden is a hard girl to understand, she hates her life and tries not to get close to anyone. Though soon you see that she slowly starts to open up to Eve and they become friends. The plot is great, I love everything about it. With a lot of twists and turns in the story that causes you to laugh and then cry. It's a really heart retching book capturing your attention from beginning to end. It's been a while since I found a book that I finish reading it in two days, that's how good this plot was. The romance was slow and sweet and the friendships were strong though out the book. The betrayals were the worse but you love how Eve gets though it.

I really loved the concept and the story, but how it was put together and written was...painful. Everything is just too easy for Eve. Everyone she runs into is jumping to help her, in the middle of what I would think is a fairly substantial forest (takes multiple days to travel across) Eve is able to run into people quickly and easily. She never really faces any challenges. Though the book is written in first person, I found myself unable to connect with Eve. Most annoyingly, for growing up fearing all men and never having seen one, it takes her a little more than a day to pretty much forget a life time of conditioning! If your suck on a rainy day, this book is fine, other than that I wouldn't recommend it.

I found this book perfect for anyone who love the type of book that takes place near the end of the world. I think that the characters were perfectly descibed for the type of problem that they were in. The Plot was really interesting and totally made me never want to put the book down. I think that the author could have described more of what everything smelt and looked like for the senes but over all a very good book! :D

And this is where we find Eve. Eve is the prize of the school. Smart, beautiful, obedient. She is the crown jewel of the school and is ready to graduate. The night before graduation she follows rebel Arden who is set to escape the confines of the school. Arden tells Eve the real truth. That they're groomed to be breeders. The King forces new graduates to become childbearers. Eve sets out to find the truth, and witnesses past graduates with swollen bellies, drugged out of their mind as drugs are pumped into their veins. She realizes the whole truth and decides to escape with the help of The Teacher. Out in the forest she finds Arden and together they head to the safe camp Califia. On their way, they come across a handsome, green eyed muscular boy named Caleb. Carey's writing has the right amount of description, pacing, tone and dialogue found on most YA novels. There's the clear cut goal of surviving and getting somewhere safe so the reader always knows the charcters need to achieve something in the end. I definitely like that. What I didn't like is Eve wanting to stay at the camp endangering all the boys and their lives. Sure she wants to stay with Caleb but how selfish can you be? The King wants her and she wants to stay? Instead of getting hurt when Caleb said no, she could have just asked him to go with her. Silly girl! This book was definitely entertaining, but it didn't wow me like other dystopian novels. This book was pretty good. I think I expected the beginning to be better, but once the drama kicks in, this book was amazing! After everything begins to unfold, I couldn't put this book down. The characters are very cute and you'll especially fall in love with Eve. The concept with the schools, the plauge that wiped out most of the population, and rebels was very interesting. This is probably one of the most creative dystopian novels I've read, and that says a lot. (A little side note, I loved Benny and Silas especially, I thought they were adorable.) Arden's a great character too once you learn the deeper truth beneath her rocky surface. And Caleb...oh my Caleb...I'm not going to say anymore ;) Awesome read, great job Anna.

I loved Eve! I could not put it down for long enough to eat! The love between Eveand Caleb is so great and I often found myself yelling at the book when I was scared or holding my breath when moments were suspenseful! Up there in my top recommended.

I thought this book was very interesting and had a great theme to it. It was a very quick read, but I was glad it didn't drag things out too long. Books that drag out events to make the book longer get set aside in my house. It was the first book I've read in a while that I sat down and finished this quickly. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys dystopian types of books.
