Every Which Way But Dead

by Kim Harrison

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | August 25, 2008 | Hardcover

There's no witch in Cincinnati tougher, sexier, or more screwed up than bounty hunter Rachel Morgan, who's already put her love life and soul in dire jeopardy through her determined efforts to bring criminal night creatures to justice.

Between "runs," she has her hands full fending off the attentions of her blood-drinking partner, keeping a deadly secret from her backup, and resisting a hot new vamp suitor.

Rachel must also take a stand in the war that's raging in the city's underworld, since she helped put away its former vampire kingpin-and made a deal with a powerful demon to do so that could cost her an eternity of pain, torment, and degradation.

And now her dark "master" is coming to collect his due.

    Yep...Vamps do have fun.

Well….they do say 3 is a charm and in this third instalment of the Hollows series our heroine will need all the charms she can muster up. For those who have not read any in this fantastic series, The Hollows are that part of Cincinnati where anyone or anything that uses magic, becomes furry or grows fangs, hang out. If you see something less than 6 inches that flies, swears and seems drunk that also could be an indication you're in THAT part of town. The basic storyline for the series is what happens when a pixy, a vamp and a witch team together to open up a detective and part time escort agency. Let's not forget that by escort I don't mean the type who follow you home for a late night snack, which, by the way can be very dangerous in the Hollows but more the type that are paid to keep you alive or not destroyed if you are already dead...yes that also can be a possibility in the Hollows. So with that little introduction aside let's get on with the review.

Of course Rachel Morgan our main kicka$$ and get kick in the a$$ character is back. Let's just say she isn't perfect and does as much kicking as receiving but we do see her become more street smarts from her mistakes. You don't get bitten, blown up and taken to hell without some of the experience rubbing out on you. Next, we have Ivy, who happens to be Rachel best friend and living vamp. She could be described as the friend who has wet dreams about you, but the wet part would be of a red colour. Kristen is also back and in a very big way. He isn't just the vamp with the attitude anymore but is becoming the vamp with Rachel's scent on him. Sniff...sniff, I smell a hot time going on. Next I would like to say Jenks the pixy but he simply is missing in this one after a falling out with Rachel. Can't wait for him to come back because he brings so much to the series. Of course Big Al the demon is back and just as bad as he was in the others. Trent the almost evil bad guy is also with us and still walks the line of bad and almost not bad. To replace Trent as the really bad guy we have a new character and he goes by the name of the Saladam. He's the type of character you can't wait for him to suffer before dying a very slow death. And this being the Hollows dying can be the lucky part. Last but not least we have another new character and she goes by the name of Ceri. She just happens to be an elf like Trent and you just get the feeling, we will be hearing a lot more about her.

The plot in this one is quite simple since there is none. It would compare to the TV show Seinfeld where it's more about the world created by what is happening to the characters than about something specific. I guess the best way to describe it is to say, it's more about subplots than a main story. It may sound uninteresting but believe me; nothing is farther from the truth. So much happening around the main character that it's bound to keep you entertained. I guess the main subplot would be how Rachel tries to get out of her deal with Big Al. Another main part would also be how Kristen is squeezing out Nick as Rachel main man or vamp in this case. Next would be the Saladam is a very bad dude segment and lastly my fav of the lot is the whole continuation and world building that the Hollows offer. I just love how the author gives us more and more info on the vamps. Who knew they could actually have fun like the rest of us and how family is very much a part of their lives or deaths depending on which level they're at. For your info: Never go out with a vamp without proper protection and in this case fang caps win over Trojans any time.

So I give a big four and a half stars or leaves depending on what you prefer to this third instalment. If you are into fantastic world building and great characters than you should really like these. But be warned if you are into totally action oriented series than these might not be to your liking. I myself find them to be fun and I just love the fact that I learn something new about the characters in every book. I guess that's why I smiled when I learned that vamps do line dance. This is the series I return to when I definitely want a good read. I simply know that the story will be fun and entertaining....P.S.... Kim, please bring back Jenks.

Rohg fantastic review as always, except for the lack of paragraphs but that seems to be a trend with everyone (myself included) these days. I have a question though; what the hell is a pixie?? Is it a long lost relation to a fairy? Why do we need pixies and fairies? Oh and fang caps and line danciing, who knew?

    Thanks D.

This is the 3rd offering in The Hollows Series & picks up in proximity to where book 2 left off. Rachel's tendency to make alliances based on convenience has caught up with her as her demon Algaliarept has fulfilled his part of the bargain to testify against Piscary & now seeks Rachel out to become his familiar. Rachel's bag of charms are not enough to save her soul this time & she is forced to work quickly to improve her ley line proficiency.

Boyfriend Nick is pretty much AWOL which may not disappoint the reader but leaves Rachel feeling abandoned. Not to fear, enter bad boy Kisten who is anxious to convince Rachel to try a vampire on for size, much to Ivy's chagrin. Ivy has given up her status as non-practicing & still looks to Rachel as a potential scion but Rachel affirms again that she's just not that into her! Our favorite pixie roommate Jenks does move out in this tale because Rachel did not trust him with Trent's secret but hopefully the absence is short lived.

Rachel reluctantly accepts a job to act as security for Trent at a business meeting but ends up getting caught in the middle of a supernatural drug lord turf war. More is revealed of Rachel's past in regards to her father but I imagine there is much more to come from the interaction of the two characters in books to come.

This book has some great comedic moments, so look for the Bite Me Betty doll & vampire line dancing! The series itself gets better with each book & I have already started 'A Fistful of Charms'.

This is my favorite in the series so far. I think the difference is that it's more exciting than the previous Rachel Morgan books. There was more action in the plot and in the bedroom (well it was actually a couch but you know what I mean). The first two are very good and I would recommend reading them before this one. Every Which Way But Dead is not the type you can enjoy without reading the first two. I would recommend the whole series to any fan of Sookie Stackhouse, Mercy Thompson, or Anita Blake.
