Dear Mindy, Can we be BFF's? We can have sleepovers and watch television reruns all night. We can not go for runs together. We'll gossip about boys all night. It will be glorious. Love, Brie Ok, but seriously, Mindy is one of those famous people I would actually want to be best friends with in real life. I watched Mindy as Kelly Kapoor on the office for years, looking forward to every time she appeared in an episode (damn you Mindy, for being such a great writer for the show that you eventually had to stop acting in it altogether). Then I found out she was writing a book and I was pretty excited for it's release. AND THEN, I found out she had her very own show coming out. Needless to say, I've watched every episode of The Mindy Project since it began airing last fall and I love it. I am a HUGE Mindy fan. Obviously. Having listened to Mindy's book shortly before her new TV show began has made me appreciate her show so much more. I feel like it's so "Mindy". So many of her personality quirks and tendencies that ooze out of her book seem to be portrayed in her character on the The Mindy Project. She may be acting to film the show, but her character on The Mindy Project is relatable, honest, sarcastically hilarious and just trying to find love when it seems like the search is hopeless. Which, really, isn't too far off from the Mindy in her book. Plus, her name in the show is also Mindy, so there's that. Mindy delivers the same wit and humour she did for the Office in this collection of essays written about her life. It's such an easy read-- I finished it in no time, the humour made me laugh out loud. She brings a quirky, fun, yet professional feel to her writings, which is relatable and fun to laugh at. Even if you haven't seen her show, definitely check out this book. You'll fall in love with Mindy.

I’m eager to see what TV star decides to release a humorous memoir in the near future as it seems to be the thing to do. Tina Fey did it, and now Mindy Kaling has done it with her hilarious collection of essays. In case you didn’t know, Mindy Kaling is one of the stars of The Office. She started off on the popular TV show as a writer and then moved into the role of Kelly Kapoor, the office’s gossipy chatterbox. I love her character on the show and was eager to read the book to see if it would be anything like her character. After not really liking Tina Fey’s Bossypants, I was pleasantly surprised when I got into Mindy Kaling’s offering. It was fun, humorous, and a great read. Interspersed with stories about growing up and starting her career, Mindy includes humorous little essays that will have readers laughing or nodding their heads in agreement. Some of the topics, like what makes a great best friend, or what the perfect amount of fame is, are total Kelly Kapoor topics. Mindy writes in such a friendly way in that as I read it, I felt I was just sitting across the table from a good friend in a coffee shop. She comes across as fun, loving, and approachable — someone who I would love to be friends with. While you don’t really expect someone to write a memoir at such a young age — Mindy is 32 — I found I finished the book wondering when the next book would come out. So much more humorous than I expected, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? was a great, comical read.

I picked this book up b/c my cousin left it in my car. I thought I'd hate it. I loved it. I'll post a better review later, but wanted to get it down as a reminder. In the meantime, I highly reccomend - even though I might lose my man-card for saying so.

This is the best book I've read all year, with the exception of The Help. It's really quite different from The Help, being a humourist and light-hearted autobiography, but a wonderful read, nonetheless. I totally understand why this woman has a job writing for comedies. I laughed (way too much, way too hard on the GO train), I had epiphanies, I felt understood. It's a light, fun, uplifting, engaging read. I can't imagine that anyone would be disappointed!

The Good Stuff * Won't lie. I have never seen an episode of the office (which is strange cuz I totally have a crush on Steve Carell -- don't judge) but am going to be buying the first season of it this weekend solely based on this read * She made me LMAO on so many occasions it was hell to pick only 3 quotes for my favorite quotes section * Self deprecating, quirky, sweet and honest - Call me Mindy we would totally have fun hanging out! * Is obviously thankful for the chances she has been given, her friends and her family -- this is very refreshing * Loves her parents -- see people parents are not always d-bags (Yes Jake and Jesse remember that!) * Her zest for life is so nice to read about and very motivational * She's honest about her mistakes and her "faults" * Doesn't get all nasty gossipy about people. Extremely classy * Love the bits on the fights between her and her co-workers. Hilarious! The part about Carell was cute * The Chapter on "Best Friends Rights and Responsibilities" is funny and so very true The Not So Good Stuff * I wanted more -- just not long enough for me * Made me snort with laughter while on bus and people stared at me like I was some kind of freak Favorite Quotes/Passages "And if you're older than twenty-eight, than just kissing someone doesn't count for crap and is not even worth mentioning. Unless you're Mormon, in which case you're going to hell." "If I had to testify under oath, I would admit, no, I don't believe Mac Teegarden is psychic. I've just been made too aware of people like Car Sagan and basic science and stuff. I am certain, though, that Mac Teegarden provided and enormous amount of comfort to people who unexpectedly lost loved ones. I don't know if it was psychic, but it was cathartic, and therapeutic, and it helped people." "My mom's a doctor, but because she came from India and then Africa, where childhood obesity was not a problem, she put no premium on having skinny kids. In fact she and my dad didn't mind having a chubby daughter. Part of me wonders if it even made them feel a little prosperous, like Have you seen our overweight Indian child? Do you know how statistically rare this is? It will then not come as a surprise to you that I've never been thin in my life - except the day I was born, when I was six pounds." I have yet to buy this book but, I just read around a 20 page excerpt from it and I'm already in love! I usually avoid these types of books because I ultimately find their stories long, drug out, and boring. That was definitely not the case with Mindy Kaling's book. Her anecdotes were, short, sweet, hilarious, and to the point. If the excerpt was that great, I can't wait to buy the book!
