by Robert Jordan

The Wheel of Times turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, and Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

I originally bought this book when it was first issued...
This book is a great start to a series that will feature many strong characters that will grow in the ensuing issues.I found the pace of the storytelling and character developments very good. Also the internal dialogues by the main players was very interesting as they often seemed to refelect each others thoughts. I just loved this book...

    Robert Jordan WOT series

Like many others, I started reading Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. I read books 1 to 6 and although I enjoyed the world Jordan had created, his long-winded descriptions of absolutely everything prevented me from picking up book 7. A friend suggested to me that I try the cd versions so I looked online and that's when I found Mike Perschon's review. Mike's review helped me put the series into the right perspective and influenced me to buy book 1 on cd. I must say that his review was spot on. Listening to the book with chapters as "episodes" is a fabulous idea and works quite well. I can't wait to buy the other cds. Thanks for the very helpful review, Mike! I hope everyone who considers reading Jordan, first reads your review.

Jordan's characters live in a world so similar to Tolkien's that it is hard to believe but his writing style is undeniably his own. The similarities between his characters and that of The Lord of The Rings are very close; such as Perrin and Pippin, Lan (the king in exile) and Aragorn ( the king in denial ), Padain fain (insidious villain) and Gollum. does anyone else see the similarities? if so, please reply.

similarities between Perrin and Pippin? Name aside, they could not be more different. Pippin is more like Mat in many ways, including his restless behavior and unfortunate desire to pull a prank. Between Lan and Aragorn, the similarities are rather... vague. Lan is not a king in exile, he is a king to a dead country, whereas all Aragorn had to do was show up and prove his lineage to be placed on the the throne. Lan is also colder and more ruthless than Aragorn is. The similarities between Fain and Gollum are also quite vague, their only mirrored qualities being that they've been twisted by an evil power and are quite insane. Fain, however, simply wishes for the destruction of Rand, whereas Gollum has a tangible object he wants to get (Ring)

This book is the beginning of a fantastic series that will keep you up at night. Death Gate Cycle, and Dragonlance fans will absolutely love this book. I have not seen this kind of genius since Tolkien, and I would be surprised if I ever see it again.

From the Critics

"Jordan has come to dominate the world that Tolkien began to reveal."--"The New York Times"
"Jordan is able to take...familiar elements and make them his own, in a powerful novel of wide and complex scope. Open religious and political conflicts add a gritty realism, while the cities and courts provide plenty of drama and splendor. Women have a stronger role than in Tolkien...Each character in this large cast remains distinct....Their adventures are varied, and exciting...."The Eye of the World" stands alone as a fantasy epic."--"Locus"
"Robert Jordan has created a fantasy world as tangible and credible as history. He has a fine eye for detail and a vivid sense of drama."--Morgan Llewelyn
