The Wheel of Times turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, and Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

From the Critics

"Jordan has come to dominate the world that Tolkien began to reveal."--"The New York Times"
"Jordan is able to take...familiar elements and make them his own, in a powerful novel of wide and complex scope. Open religious and political conflicts add a gritty realism, while the cities and courts provide plenty of drama and splendor. Women have a stronger role than in Tolkien...Each character in this large cast remains distinct....Their adventures are varied, and exciting...."The Eye of the World" stands alone as a fantasy epic."--"Locus"
"Robert Jordan has created a fantasy world as tangible and credible as history. He has a fine eye for detail and a vivid sense of drama."--Morgan Llewelyn

    Great First Novel 4

The novel itself is excellent. The characters are all well introduced, without giving too much away. The situation they are begins to become clear, as are the obstacles they face. Most importantly the wonderful world and its rich background are slowly hinted at. This novel is very approachable and contains a great hook to keep you reading. The only reason for the four leafs is that it is overshadowed by most other books in the Wheel of Time series.

A friend told me about this book. She said that it was the best thing she'd ever read in her life. I gave it a try. By about page 150 I was staring at the wall instead of the book. Jordan wasted too long on descriptions at the beginning. I couldn't even finish this book. Some people love it. For me, it was too slow-paced. read more

Jordan's characters live in a world so similar to Tolkien's that it is hard to believe but his writing style is undeniably his own. The similarities between his characters and that of The Lord of The Rings are very close; such as Perrin and Pippin, Lan (the king in exile) and Aragorn ( the king in denial ), Padain fain (insidious villain) and Gollum. does anyone else see the similarities? if so, please reply.

    Robert Jordan WOT series 5

This review is from: The Eye Of The World (Audio Book (CD))

Like many others, I started reading Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. I read books 1 to 6 and although I enjoyed the world Jordan had created, his long-winded descriptions of absolutely everything prevented me from picking up book 7. A friend suggested to me that I try the cd versions so I looked online and that's when I found Mike Perschon's review. Mike's review helped me put the series into the right perspective and influenced me to buy book 1 on cd. I must say that his review was… read more

    Wheel of Time Series 4

This is a highly addictive series! It is magical, mythical, action packed and a tad bit of romance. There are a few slumps here and there but Robert Jordan always picks it up. Well worth the journey!! You will not want the series to end!

    Tolkien who? 5

This review is from: The Eye of the World: Book One of 'The Wheel of Time' (Trade Paperback)

I don't know how he did it, but Robert Jordan was able to reshape the world of Tolkien in his own image. What happened to the trolls, the orcs, the elves and dwarves? Gone. Finally. Jordan invents his own world, his own monsters, his own gods and heroes, and emerges not with a trilogy but an entire series (still unfinished, unfortunately). Tolkien was an amazing author but he and Jordan just cannot be compared because each can boast complete originality. The most unique aspect of this series is… read more

How to Read "The Wheel of Time" series 5

This review is from: The Eye of the World (Mass Market Paperbound)

In 1990, I picked up a book by a writer named Robert Jordan, who was mainly known among fans of fantasy for the Conan novels he penned, which were among my favorites at the time. I bought it without a moment's hesitation and loved it. The Eye of the World followed the classic formula high fantasy had been treading since Tolkien wrote of hobbits leaving the Shire with Nazgul in pursuit. Getting to the end of the book and realizing it was the first in the series was icing on the cake of a… read more

    The Best Ever! 5

This is by far the best fantasy novel I have ever read! Jordan has captured my imagination like none other and pulled me into his compelling world of Trollocs, Aes Sedai, and the One Power. I read this novel from beginng to end without any stops except to eat (which I only did grudgingly). A book nobody should be without in their collection!

    Hooked from the Start 5

This review is from: The Eye of the World (Mass Market Paperbound)

If you enjoyed Lord of the Rings and Star Wars then this book is for you. Robert Jordan provides great character background & development combined with excitement & adventure. You instantly become attached to the characters and find yourself either loving or hating them. A great story about growth, exploration, adventure, magic and more. A fantasy reader's delight. This is the first book of a twelve book series (thirteen if you count the prequel) and it will have you hooked from the… read more

Amazing, simply amazing. The first couple chapters were slow, I admit, but the rest was incredible. Robert Jordan makes you feel like you know and care about the people in the book. I could not put it down!

It's long, yes. There are some slow parts, yes. But mainly it's a great series with endearing characters in an engaging story. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a worthy investment for their time and imagination.

    Amazing Fantasy by Jordan 5

This review is from: The Eye of the World: Book One of 'The Wheel of Time' (Trade Paperback)

This is an amazinhg mix of fantasy and thrills. Robert Jordan is an amazing writer who came out with a series of books that could compete with Tolkien and such. The eye of the world is a very interesting novel and women tend to have big roles in the book, a lot more than Tolkien.

Jordan is a Fantasy God 5

This review is from: The Eye of the World (Mass Market Paperbound)

His Epic series is one of the best ever read. I eagerly await each new installment. The fact that anyone could not love and appreciate this series astounds me. It has everything a great fantasy epic needs, love, heartache, loss, fighting, war and of course magic. This story weaves it's way through the books and into your hearts. To listen to those who tell you not to read this book is to take some bad advice this book is an essential part to a Fantasy lovers library.
