From the Publisher

"

Fast food has hastened the malling of our landscape, widened the chasm between rich and poor, fueled an epidemic of obesity, and propelled American cultural imperialism abroad. That's a lengthy list of charges, but here Eric Schlosser makes them stick with an artful mix of first-rate reportage, wry wit, and careful reasoning.

Schlosser's myth-shattering survey stretches from California's subdivisions where the business was born to the industrial corridor along the New Jersey Turnpike where many fast food's flavors are concocted. Along the way, he unearths a trove of fascinating, unsettling truths -- from the unholy alliance between fast food and Hollywood to the seismic changes the industry has wrought in food production, popular culture, and even real estate. He also uncovers the fast food chains' disturbing efforts to reel in the youngest, most susceptible consumers even while they hone their institutionalized exploitation of teenagers and minorities.

This book is a must read for those who are concerned about the food they are eating. This covers every aspect of the hamburger based fast-food industry from the policies governing it to the working conditions to the way the meat is processed.

    Something to Chew on 5

This book has circulated to so many people that it's starting to look a bit beat up. The cow slaughter chapter has to be the one that sticks in my mind. Incredible descriptions of the health and safety risks workers endure in slaughterhouses. A must read for adults. Would be an interesting book to have students review.

    A Real Eye-Opener 4

This review is from: Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side Of The All-american Meal (Hardcover)

This is an excellent book about fast food: the food itself, and the impact it has on society. It offers a great deal of insight that is, at times, quite alarming. On the other hand, I'm not convinced it approaches the issue from an entirely objective view, and is a little dramatic sometimes. Nevertheless, it's a real page turner, and, trust me, if you believe even half of what it claims (and I do), it might have a profound effect on your view of fast food. An excellent read, and very… read more

    Who Knew? 5

After watching an Eric Schlosser interview on the 'Supersize Me' DVD, I thought 'why not?' What I read has turned me against the industry that this book exposes, I don't ever care how hard life may get: I WILL NOT apply for a job at a fast food restaurant. To be fair, this book is based on the USA industry, but not much is different from Canada in this case, although I find small town McD's are more friendly than big cities (ex: Toronto, Orlando...) Great book, read it!!! read more

WOW! I have just finished reading this eye-opening book and it is one of the few which I must recommend to everyone! It examines in great depth the way that fast-food affects all of our lives. The strongest issue to me was the breach of Human-Rights that occur not in a 3rd world country but in the most developed countries on this planet.

    No more cowboys 5

I wanted to run away and be a cowboy. What a dream... Rounding up healthy grass fed cattle from the wide open plains under the big sky on a noble cow pony. Well that dream is cow plop. The cattle industry is now based on filthy feedlots in idustrial parks near truck and train terminals. No more cowboy dream- Thanks McDonalds and the rest. Perhaps a chef? Nope, I can only get a minimum wage job flippin burgers (a machine will tell me when to flip them). A potato farmer nope. Well maybe I'd… read more

Schlosser's book (on the NYT Bestsellers list) is a bold and brave look at the fast food industry that applies as much to Canada as it does the US. By focussing on one aspect of the liberalization of trade, he shows - in often explicit detail - how profit has taken precedence over all other aspects of this massive industry, including worker's wages, safety and health, not to mention that of the consumer. For anyone interested in or passionate about the disastrous ramifications of the… read more
