A Feast for Crows: A Song Of Ice And Fire: Book Four

by George R.r. Martin

Random House Publishing Group | September 26, 2006 | Mass Market Paperbound

GAME OF THRONES: A NEW ORIGINAL SERIES, NOW ON HBO.

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin's monumental epic cycle of high fantasy. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace . . . only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

A FEAST FOR CROWS

It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears. . . . With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King's Landing. Robb Stark's demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist-or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out.

But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces-some familiar, others only just appearing-are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the strong will acquire the skills, the power, and the magic to survive the stark and terrible times that lie before them. It is a time for nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages to come together and stake their fortunes . . . and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests-but only a few are the survivors.

    A murder of crows

An apt title for this book. Lots of death and destruction. It felt less like war (and the previous 2 books) and more like plotting and vengeance. That said, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Since I had previously read other reviews that warned me some of my favourite characters would not be narrating in this book, but back again in book 5, I wasn't disappointed with A Feast for Crows. It definitely advanced the plot, wasn't too slow (albeit a bit slower than the previous 3), and I can't wait to see where the series goes next! Definitely worth reading, if for no other reason than to move on to book #5! Enjoy.

This book is hard to get through. There are two important things you should know. 1) this book is actually only half of what it was originally intended to be. 2) It's mostly from the perspective of minor and VERY minor characters.

The author made book 4 too big, so in order to publish it he basically split it in half by publishing half of the characters perspectives in this one, and half in the next. It can be quite boring in times and the narratives of minor characters lull a bit.

You do see a lot of behind the scenes that will make you frustrated for the main characters. You'll know everything that's going to happen before they do. Of course, in typical fashion of this author the ending is quite riveting and leaves you wanting the next book.

Certainly worth reading as the next book picks up, but be prepared for something quite differently paced than the previous books. Keep at it, it's worth it in the end

The interlude of crows and sparrows

A chapter a night before bed and months after the last book, I have finally caught up with the series. Let my wait for "A Dance with Dragons" officially begin!

As always, Martin does not hold back, from his plot development and twists, to the fanaticism, necromancy, and sex involved. It still remains very character-driven - old and new, or ones reborn under different names, titles and purposes, cross paths aplenty. Kingdoms too mentioned casually in earlier installments come into focus and play greater parts in the unfolding story. With the war coming to an end but conflicts and plotting still ever present, this book felt very much like an interlude to bigger things to come. Martin has laid a great foundation for the sparring and sorcery that is just inevitable.

I actually wished he had never included his little note at the end of "A Feast for Crows." It would have given less of a reason for readers to complain about the long wait, although I do fully understand that close to 6 years (and counting!) is too wide a gap to endure for a book that had supposedly been written as a part of this installment but had to be split because of its sheer volume.

Nevertheless, while some have lost hope, I remain a fan. Think of your loyal fans Mr. Martin, especially those who have waited for half a decade, and get it published! At least there is the upcoming HBO tv adaptation of "A Game of Thrones," premiering April 17, to tide us over. It looks very promising and with Martin involved in it too, it might serve as a reminder that there is more work to be done.

I thought this was a very riveting book and along with the series I would like to read that too. A feast for crows is a great book that should be reconized by all. George R.r. Martin is a great author and maybe my faverite! I recommend this book to everybody.

I loved this one as I did the others, but the story isn't done. WHERE IS THE SEQUEL?

I finished to read all available books (4). Very interesting, I cannot deny it, but too depressing - all positive heroes are dying, evils are winning. I hope that in the future parts good fellows (who still alive) get the revenge. Sure, I will read the future parts too - it's too interesting just to avoid it.

I counted down the days before this book came out. I'd read all the previous books in the series at least twice and couldn't wait to hear more about Arya, Jon, Jamie, and the rest. The book takes up right after "A Storm of Swords", and actually the first few chapters overlap a bit. So many revelations occured in the story that I don't know how I'm going to wait for the next one. The only down side to this latest sequel is that Mr. Martin had to leave some of the more interesting characters out of this book, and instead put their sides of the story in the next volume. According to him, the book was getting too long to make it printable. However, the plus side is that we won't have to wait too long for "A Dance with Dragons" since about half the book is already written. Savour this book.
