I was quite surprized to find that I quite enjoyed reading this book. I had read that it was fluffy, soft porn with little literary merit. I found however, it rather the opposite. First of all, I find E L James uses sophisticated vocabulary and witticisms throughout her writing. I particularly liked the clever banter between Ana and Christian during their emails. I also enjoyed references that Ana makes to her inner Goddess at moments when Christian gets her mojo going. I had never thought like this before and it made me more aware of what a person's inner dialogue might sound like when in a heady, lusty relationship like this one. Next, the character development made me understand the dynamics of a dominant-submissive relationship. E L James does a great job of initiating the reader, along with Ana, to this world. Obviouly, the author has done her research because the decriptions are so precise that we can almost feel the sensations ourselves. Finally, I enjoyed how the character of Christian evolves and softens in this book. It makes me want to read on into the trilogy in the hopes that there actually is the potential for what Ana truly wants and craves: true love and not just a convenient arrangement with physical and material benefits. Cant't wait to read on!
