When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana's quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too-but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey's singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success-his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family-Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey's secrets and explores her own dark desires.

Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

    Not great

I bought the series after hearing a lot of hype about it...but I just couldn't get into these books. The writing style is horrible, the plot is transparent, and the characters are unrealistic. D- for this one.

    Why all this Hype

My thoughts: Media hype and curiosity got the better of me and lured me into reading this twisted story. In my opinion, it is definitely not a literary work of art. The heroine’s dialogue in a backstreet language weaves between her subconscious voice and her desires creating a never ending spin that goes on and on. As I read page after page of descriptive sex scenes from vanilla to kinky and the more explicit it became the more I wanted to laugh. The whole premise borders on dumpster sex…. maybe hamburger but definitely not haute cuisine. The author has created some sustained tension to tease her readers but sex and one’s dreams are definitely the meat of the plot. To say this novel deploys every cheap clichés in existence would be an understatement. Enough said time to move on….

It seems that even with all profanity removed from my review, this website will not allow me to upload my thoughts. I cannot figure out what word is triggering the censor, or maybe its just that my entire review was negative. Freedom of speech be gone & censorship at its finest. Either way, Good Reads allowed it so if you want the flip side to all the hype, head over there. http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/487352712

    Not safe for work.

This book blew my mind in the best way possible. It was an easy read, captivating, envy-worthy, juicy AND had good erotica. Actually, it's the other way around. It had good erotica backed up by a pretty interesting plot. You were cheering for Anastasia, the shy, sweet new college grad who lost her virginity to the emotionally challenged but filthy rich, (emotions are overrated anyways:) cocky and environmentally friendly mogul. No other book in the trilogy compares to the first taste of ecstasy this book packed. It gets all redundant and pointless after this but I adored this book despite all the critics saying it was badly written and too pornographical. Say what you must but it was definitely entertaining. So let's give it up for the woman who's probably permanently made 80% of the female population blush just at the sound of the name Christian...

    Terrible book

I am embarrassed to have read only 3 chapters. I have kids and this is shameful literature. If you can call it that. I would have given it zero rating if possible.

    Well Read

If you think this book is about child abuse, I suggest you read it. This novel is about a relationship between two consenting adults. Since when is a woman in her twenties considered a child? Folks, ignore this review. This is an incredible book and the fact that it is has been #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list speaks volumes. Pun intended.

    Dayana Romero

First I would like to correct the fact that this is NOT about child abuse. The individual in this book, the women was 21 at least because she was graduating from university which is mentioned at the start of the book. I have two small children myself, work in the mental health field and have enough letters adjacent to my last name where I can tell you that before we claim child abuse we really need to understand what it is, and what is considered child abuse. Calling this child abuse is a gross representation and a very inappropriate use of the word. She is an adult without diminished capacity. Lets be careful when we use that term.

    Somewhere between wasn't bad/liked it....

I agree with other reviewers that the repetative nature of this book becomes annoying after a while. I did not find the book shocking in the least, as a matter of fact I was expecting more. Grammatical and spelling errors always throw me off and this book is no exception, although they were minor. It's a book of fiction, a fantasy, I get it, but Anastasia is a bit unbelievable. It's hard to imagine a virgin being able to perform the way she does. Anastasia should have been a girl with a teeny bit of experience. It is a fast read and I did find myself wanting to turn the pages for more, to find out what happens, to see if the book lives up to the hype, which in the end I think it may have just done so marginally. But it left me still wanting more, I was hoping to be shocked and I was let down.

    Good book

I enjoyed fifty shades of grey but I find their are some things missing. The characters are not developed enough to my liking. The book was addicting though, once you started getting to the interesting stuff you did not want to stop but at the same time, I feel like things were missing in the book. It was also romantic at some times which I enjoyed, because it took away from the sex a bit, it was also repetitive sometimes. I would still give the book a try it's good but not the best I've read.

Worst Book I've read in a long time
    by Love to Read

I am sorry to everyone who loved this book, but even as a mindless easy beach read this book is terrible. The plot is predictable and tired. Actually even calling it a plot line is overly generous. The characters were dull, simple and almost annoying. I stopped reading it because I couldn't stand reading her pathetic(and incredibly repetitive) train of thought. Terrible, absolutely terrible.

Terribly repititious. I cannot abide a poorly written book and this one is probably one of the worst. This author must have a very limited vocabulary.

    Surprizingly Good

I was quite surprized to find that I quite enjoyed reading this book. I had read that it was fluffy, soft porn with little literary merit. I found however, it rather the opposite. First of all, I find E L James uses sophisticated vocabulary and witticisms throughout her writing. I particularly liked the clever banter between Ana and Christian during their emails. I also enjoyed references that Ana makes to her inner Goddess at moments when Christian gets her mojo going. I had never thought like this before and it made me more aware of what a person's inner dialogue might sound like when in a heady, lusty relationship like this one. Next, the character development made me understand the dynamics of a dominant-submissive relationship. E L James does a great job of initiating the reader, along with Ana, to this world. Obviouly, the author has done her research because the decriptions are so precise that we can almost feel the sensations ourselves. Finally, I enjoyed how the character of Christian evolves and softens in this book. It makes me want to read on into the trilogy in the hopes that there actually is the potential for what Ana truly wants and craves: true love and not just a convenient arrangement with physical and material benefits. Cant't wait to read on!

    A bit limp
    by Paul Grimes

I was on a long train trip from Stalingrad to Peking, so I had a lot of time to read this book. I had heard good things about it from my minister, my pastor and my spiritualist. Once the train left Lenin station, I got comfortable and settled in. I read it all in one go. Not because I enjoyed it, but because it was the only distraction from the voluminous amount of vodka my fellow bunk mate, Sergi, a Soviet soldier back from Poland, was consuming. the book starts out a bit slow. In the beginning, Falstaff, the protagonist, is very comfortable with public nudity, but after the fall of the Empire, his sword becomes, how should I put this,...er..listless. He goes on a quest to find some steel for his blade and ends up meeting Margaret Thatcher at a commune in Sweden. They fall passionately in love and engage in what can only be described as acts of pure carnality. Mrs Thatcher is a demon in the sack and shows Falstaf what it means to really be a man. Steamy erotic scenes aside, the writing was pedantic and shallow. The introduction of the wombat as a secondary character was completely superfluous and the cameo by Shawadawady, ridiculous. All in all it was a time waster not quite of the first water. 2 out of 6 for me.

Meah.. not what I was expecting

After all the hoopla I really thought this was going to be a great book. But it's just a glorified Harlequin Romance - one of the more steamy ones, granted, but if you like good writing this really isn't the right book for you. I really find it hard to believe how incredibly popular the books are, considering how mind-bogglingly average it is. If you want a book about sex, read it. Or read some other romance novel. If you need to read it to see what everyone is talking about, save your money and just borrow it from the library!

This was by far beyond an amazing book. Everything was amazing, this is the first and only time that I felt like I needed to turn the page. It was just so amazing! It was just so sexy and hot. Not a childrens book to be honest, but it,s a must read. I loved it!

I don't know what all the hype is about for this book. It is very poorly written, I felt like I was reading a book meant for teenagers, except for the subject matter. Some reviewers have called this "literary art". OMG people! This is garbage, not art! Ana is totally unbelievable as a character, and Christian is an abuser of women, plain and simple. BDSM in the bedroom between consenting adults is one thing, but this extends outside the bedroom, and with all the hype and Hollywood rushing to make the movie, it's troubling because the book, to me, says this kind of thing is OK, because Christian is a troubled soul who had bad things happen to him. I've heard so many people say "Oh, I'd love to meet a Christian, he's so romantic". People, wth?? He's a control freak who likes inflicting pain! He makes Ana feel horrible all the time, she cries regularly. The sex scenes are terrible and totally unbelievable, no first timer would be able to "perform" the way Ana does. I've had people say to me that the story gets better in book 2 and 3, I won't find out because I'm not wasting my time on it. I've heard the author is a fan fiction writer and her followers bought the books, and that's how the hype began. She should go back to fan fiction.

thanks for your comment on my post. i totally agree with your comments on the book as well. what's wrong with these other women?? i completely agree with you as well that "not first timer would be able to 'perform' the way Ana does". that disgusted me as well in how unrealistic that (always) was. such amateurish writing. yep. hated it. doubt i'll even try the other two.

    Not Worth The Hype!
    by Stephanie

It was a good series. I read it because everywhere I turned someone was reading or talking about it. The story line is good and intertwined through the 3 books. The grammar however is annoying, something I couldnt read around. Everytime I went by a mistake I was irritable. Did no one edit this book? Not to mention, since when did we start calling the female body part by random names, it is what it is, let's be adult about it. This is a book about sex after all. Even kindergarten children call the part by what it is. Calling it "my sex" or any other random nickname distracts you from the overall flow of the novel

okay so this book is definitely not for kids under the age of 18 cause there is way too much graphical detail in it but for those who like that kind of thing this is the book for you. For those who love a good romantic story this is also a great book for you! I only started reading this book because my cousin told me about it but the way she had explained it was way off compared to what exactly happened, however a great book in itself, i would totally recommend this to people because of there is no lack of drama!!!
