Fire Study

by Maria V. Snyder

Mira | March 1, 2008 | Trade Paperback

The apprenticeship is over— now the real test has begun.

When word that Yelena is a Soulfinder—able to capture and release souls—spreads like wildfire, people grow uneasy. Already Yelena''s unusual abilities and past have set her apart. As the Council debates Yelena''s fate, she receives a disturbing message: a plot is rising against her homeland, led by a murderous sorcerer she has defeated before.…

Honor sets Yelena on a path that will test the limits of her skills, and the hope of reuniting with her beloved spurs her onward. Her journey is fraught with allies, enemies, lovers and would-be assassins, each of questionable loyalty. Yelena will have but one chance to prove herself—and save the land she holds dear.

There's a lot going on in this book! There's no other way to put it. Alot of the storyline was Yelena struggles to discover her identity as a magician and Soulfinder. There's non-stop action from the beginning of the book right till the end, this seems to be the norm in this series. The beginning (first five chapters) was alot of repeating from the previous books, it was unnecessary and boring, but worth it. Yelena takes us on an advenure through this book that was very exciting. Also it had a good ending, Yelena has finally come into her own, she faces these trials and overcomes them.

I enjoyed the FIRE STUDY, and though I had like and dislike issue with this trilogy I am glad I read them. I would recommend STUDY series to people who like Fantasy genre, the series is suitable to Young Adults and onward.

    Exciting final book

This is the final book in the Study series. As much as I loved these books, this one was my least favorite. I still like Yelena and think that she is a great character, along with Valek, but this book just did not come together in the same way.

Snyder is still very good at creating excitement, this book starts off quite exciting and she has a knack for cliffhanger ending chapters. However, I found this book to be a bit repetitive with many of the details. I also found Snyder spent a lot of time filling in background from the other books. Sometimes this was seamless, but sometimes it felt like a bit much.

This book brought together a lot of the best characters from both of the previous books. The action in this book was non-stop, as Yelena faced one horrible situation after another.

I am torn about this book - I really did like it. Despite some of the issues I had with the book, I raced right though it, it just wasn't as good as the other two. However, it is nice to see how everything ended and to enjoy the adventure of how Yelena learns to counter her most fearsome enemy yet, the Fire Warper. All in all, a good book and worth the read, especially if you have read the other two in the series.

    Not so good

(The Chapters/Indigo website has been deleting my ratings so: I gave this book 2 out of 5 stars/leaves.)

In general I was rather disappointed with this third installment in the series. I had read the first two and decided to give the series a chance, yet I was ultimately left rather unsatisfied with its resolution.

A central problem with this third novel, to my mind, was that I got the distinct and annoying feeling that Yelena (i.e. the main character) had not evolved as an individual. To the contrary, several decisions she made (in particular where her impatience with her mentor Moon Man is concerned) came across as both immature and poorly considered. Also, the author did not spend much time resolving crucial questions: instead most of the book is spent running from one crisis to the next, crises which Yelena barrels through rather thoughtlessly (and I would add pointlessly) as usual.

I would suggest reading the first book in the series and ignoring the last two.

    JMHO.

Similar recommended titles (given here because of the weird problems I've been having with the Chapters/Indigo website and which they STILL haven't fixed):

    -Grimspace, by Ann Aguirre
    -Stardoc #1, by S. L. Viehl
-A woman worth ten coppers, by Morgan Howell

I have all the books and now there perfect covers are ripped torn and worn down due to how many times i have read them. Seriously you don't know obsessed intill you have read these books.
