The Fix: Soccer And Organized Crime

by Declan Hill

McClelland & Stewart | September 2, 2008 | Hardcover

The Fix is the most explosive story of sports corruption in a generation. Intriguing, riveting, and compelling, it tells the story of an investigative journalist who sets out to examine the world of match-fixing in professional soccer.

From the Introduction
Understand how gambling fixers work to corrupt a soccer game and you will understand how they move into a basketball league, a cricket tournament, or a tennis match (all places, by the way, that criminal fixers have moved into). My views on soccer have changed. I still love the Saturday-morning game between amateurs: the camaraderie and the fresh smell of grass. But the professional game leaves me cold. I hope you will understand why after reading the book. I think you may never look at sport in the same way again.

    An impressive read...

I highly recommend this book. Mr. Hill's writing style oozes investigative journalist, with facts to please the most ardent detail-oriented reader. Yet, he also explains everything so clearly that it's very easy to grasp. He gives insight into a world that you may already suspect, but need confirmation that it exists.
It is without a doubt, a story that needs to be told. Be warned that it will change the way you view your favorite sport.
I sincerely hope that this book shocks and angers people into forcing change. We can't allow illegal industries to control our sports. We deserve reality - not a fixed outcome based on who can be bought.
I will watch the World Cup with newly opened eyes and great interest.

I read it all in one go, I could not put it down. Mr. Hill, my hat is off to you. To see how the beautiful game has been affected in Asia, and what is happening in Europe, makes me fear for the sport. Let us hope the MLS is taking note. Thank you for opening my eyes.

A good mix of travelogue, sport and investigative journalism with sociology /anthropology thrown in. All of it immensely readable. No jargon, no dry bits or rough spots. Good from beginning to end. Read it, and see for yourself.

A very candid, behind closed doors look into the underworld of gambling & soccer- all the way to the World Cup- including match fixing.
