About the Author

Mercedes Lackey was born on June 24, 1950 in Chicago. She received a B.S. from Purdue University in 1972 and, that same year, married her first husband, Anthony Lackey. Lackey worked for many years as a computer programmer and as an analyst for a survey and data processing firm before becoming a full-time writer. Lackey had always enjoyed science fiction and fantasy, particularly the work of Andre Norton. She started writing her own short stories when her favorite authors weren't producing new books fast enough to keep her in reading material. She began writing professionally with the encouragement of author C.J. Cherryh, whom Lackey met at a science fiction convention. Many of Lackey's books, including the Queen's Own trilogy, the Vows and Honor series, and the Last Herald-Mage and Mage Winds trilogies, take place on the imaginary world of Valdemar. Magic's Price, the concluding novel in the Last Herald-Mage trilogy, received the Lambda Award, and Arrows of the Queen, from the Queen's Own series, received a Best Books for Young Adults citation from the American Library Association. Valdemar is also the setting for The Black Gryphon and The White Gryphon, books that were co-authored with and illustrated by Lackey's second husband, Larry Dixon. Lackey is also the author of the Bardic Voices series and a series of occult mysteries featuring Diana Tregarde, a modern-day witch. Lackey enjoys collaborating with other authors, and has co-written books with a variety of new as well as established science fiction authors, including C. J. Cherryh, Anne McCaffrey, Piers Anthony, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Mark Shepherd, and Ru Emerson. The Elvenbane, co-written with Andre Norton, was the Science Fiction Book Club's 1991 book of the year. Lackey is also a professional lyricist. She and Dixon reside in Oklahoma.
