Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoyable and memorable Michelle Ferguson is a wonderful writer. The characters she develops in From Away are not only enjoyable to meet but stay with you well after the story is read. As a frequent visitor to Nova Scotia and Cape Breton in my youth, Ms. Ferguson's novel awoke my desire to join the characters in their beautiful yet often perilous environment. Excellent read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best enjoyed with a hot cup of tea! In From Away, we are whisked into the close-knit community of Lupin’s Point, where 28 year old Marion has chosen to spend her summer at her uncle’s abandoned summer home. Her she plans to take time to reflect on her life and figure out the age-old question: where should she go from here? But peace and quiet are far from what Marion encounters. Instead, Marion meets busy-body Alice Lupin, who befriends Marion instantly, while also making it her mission to “figure out” Marion’s true intentions; Crazy Hal who tries to shoot Marion when he thinks she’s a lobster thief, and then of course there’s Donny, the handsome, well-mannered man Marion insists on being “just friends” with. Marion soon finds out that you can’t really mind your own business in Lupin’s Point; your business is everyone’s business. And it doesn’t take long for Marion to become just as interested in the people of Lupin’s Point as they are in her. But will they ever fully accept her as one of them? Can Marion break through her label of being “from away”, even though her own father is from Nova Scotia? And lastly, will Marion allow herself to find love? Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new friend Marion What a page-turner! Ferguson has a talent for creating memorable characters, and infusing them with quirks that make them jump off the page. I hope one day there will be another book about my new friend Marion, who appears to be just beginning her life in Nova Scotia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from From Away H In reading a recently released novel, From Away, I've discovered a gifted and talented new story teller on the Canadian scene -Michelle Ferguson. From Away is a heart warming, uplifting story about the true nature of "folks" in rural Nova Scotia. The author is certainly a master of character development. Reading of the life and times of te inhabitants of Lupin' Point has introduced me to some new " friends" in a manner that the technology of " Facebook" can only hope to emulate. Definitely looking for more from this prolific new author!! Kenneth M Kelly

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Read! I already miss the characters from Lupin’s Point. From the first sentence, I was pulled into the world of Marion Mackenzie. Michelle’s knack for story telling created a believable place, from her vivid descriptions of the characters and their situations, to the ocean and stunning coastal scenery. Throughout this book I felt as though I was right there along side Marion and Alice with the sea spray on my face. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and definitely recommend it.

The quirks and charms of small community ring true whether you're a Maritimer or a prairie dweller. A strong sense of place runs through. There are humourous moments, touching words, and heart gripping scenes that make you want to continue to read. From Away takes you somewhere refreshing and leaves you thinking about the fun characters you met there, the breathtaking sea views you saw, and the discoveries about life you made along the way.
