Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mindfullness Meditation Kabat-Zinn has written an excellent book on "mindfulness". I attend a Mindfull Mediation course at Sunnybrook Hospital geared towards patients with pain issues. Kabat-Zinn is the book that the course is based on, and provieds an incredible referece on understanding your current state, and building skills to improve upon how you handle stressful, or painfull challenges. But also incorporates mindfullenss in everything you do, from really esperiencing the food you have prepared and digested, or how you might take a walk and see things in an enlighten state (trees more vibrant, a rainbow, the clouds and the air we breath). This book takes you on a journey that offers you a more peaceful life with new found strength and fortitude. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to find their inner strength and your ability to take life as it comes with all itts beauty, challenges, and learned experiances. Read this book and you could make some very poisitive strides in your life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book saved my life If you're curious about meditation read this book. If you're curious about the 'mind-body' connection, read this book. If you are suffering physically, emotionally and/or spiritually this book can really help. Following the programme teaches you to understand and view suffering from a perspective that radically reduces suffering. Ironic, but true. When I first discovered this book ten years ago my life was a 'full catastrophe' Several deaths in the family, breast cancer, heart surgery depression...and that's just scratching the surface. This programme, which is still very relevant today, has truly given me 'a new lease on life'.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW!!! This book has changed my life dramatically. I suffer from a number of illnesses including osteroporosis, osteoarthitis, fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease, severe clinical depression and kidney disease. I have tried narcotic pain relievers, antidepressants, exercise, natural remedies, massage therapy, swimming, and whatever else any sympathetic friend and/or doctor suggested with only temporary relief. I have experienced pain daily for 20 years and after reading this book, I cannot describe the immense relief I experience daily. "Full Catastrophe Living" is easy to read, easy to follow, and if you truly need to find relief from the many stresses of today, this is the book to read! The meditation practices taught in this book can be done whenever you need a "boost" or to relieve tension. You will see things in a different light, learn to appreciate everything life has to offer, even if you have chronic pain or are having difficulty getting through each day. I am learning to live "moment by moment" helping me to deal with numerous stresses (financial, health, employment, etc.)much more effectively. I would never have believed the possibilities had I not read this book and use its teachings. Thank you Jon Kabat-Zinn.

Read from the Book

Chapter Twelve Glimpses of Wholeness, Delusions of Separateness Have you ever looked at a dog and really seen it in its total "dogness"? A dog is quite miraculous when you really see it. What is it? Where did it come from? Where is it going? What is it doing here? Why is it shaped the way it is? What is its "view" of things, of the neighborhood? What are its feelings? Children tend to think about things this way. Their vision is fresh. They see things as if for the first time every time. Sometimes our seeing gets tired. We just see a dog. "If you''ve seen one, you''ve seen them all." So we barely see it at all. We tend to see more through our thoughts and opinions than through our eyes. Our thoughts act as a kind of veil preventing us from seeing things with fresh eyes. What comes into view is identified by the thinking, categorizing mind and quickly framed: a dog. This mind actually prevents us from seeing the dog in its fullness. It processes and categorizes the "dog" signal very quickly in our brain and then moves on to do the same to the next perception or thought. When my son was two years old, he wanted to know if there was a person inside of our dog. It warmed my heart to see through his eyes in that moment. I knew why he was asking. Sage was a real family member. He had his rightful place. His presence was felt, he participated in the psychic space of the house, he was a complete being, as much a "personality" as any o
