by Michael J Fox

Hyperion | October 3, 2012 | Hardcover

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Future: Twists And Turns And Lessons Learned is rated 3 out of 5 by 2.
Michael J. Fox abandoned high school to pursue an acting career, but went on to receive honorary degrees from several universities and garner the highest accolades for his acting, as well as for his writing. In his new book, he inspires and motivates graduates to recognize opportunities, maximize their abilities, and roll with the punches--all with his trademark optimism, warmth, and humor.
In A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future, Michael draws on his own life experiences to make a case that real learning happens when "life goes skidding sideways." He writes of coming to Los Angeles from Canada at age eighteen and attempting to make his way as an actor. Fox offers up a comically skewed take on how, in his own way, he fulfilled the requirements of a college syllabus. He learned Economics as a starving artist; an unexpected turn as a neophyte activist schooled him in Political Science; and his approach to Comparative Literature involved stacking books up against their movie versions.

Replete with personal stories and hilarious anecdotes, Michael J. Fox''s new book is the perfect gift for graduates.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quick read - would make a great gift. ***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS*** Like I say with a lot of books, I really wanted to like this one. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future was one of the first books I took out with my new library card. I figured it was by Michael J. Fox, so it should be excellent. First of all, the book is tiny. There’s probably just as many words in the book as there is in the title. Second of all, I had no idea that Fox went back and got his GED later in life. I also had no idea that he held so many honorary doctorates (I’m still waiting for someone to offer me one, by the way—why should the stars get such treatment?). Third, if you’re going to take anything away from this very short read, it’s that right when you think you have it made in the shade, life will throw you a curve ball. It’s inevitable. You may not be able to control life’s events, but you can control how you react to them. This book would be a great gift for a graduate, though I don’t see myself reading it again anytime soon.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A quick inspirational read that may have been somewhat spoiled by language. This is a short "Life Lessons" sort of book intended for new graduates complete with personal inspirational stories and anecdotes. The main lessons I took away from this book include the importance of being thankful; the significant impact a mentor can have through the tough times; accepting your current situation and lastly, seeing the lessons there that can make you a better person. My favourite quote of the book finishes it off beautifully - "LIVE TO LEARN" Though I did enjoy this quick read, I at times found it a bit wordy. It felt like Michael was trying to overcompensate for the fact that he was a high-school dropout by attempting to sound "brainy." Though I have no doubt that Michael J. Fox is indeed smart, words like “Blithely, Burgeoning, Bulwark, Intrepid, Matriculation, Soliloquy, Pronouncement, and Bacchanalia” (just to name a few) may be lost on the average reader.
