Notes de l'éditeur

A dazzling writer of international stature, Anne Enright is one of Ireland's most singular voices. Now she delivers The Gathering, a return to an intimate canvas and moving, evocative portrait of a large Irish family haunted by the past. The nine surviving children of the Hegarty clan are gathering in Dublin for the wake of their wayward brother, Liam, drowned in the sea. His sister, Veronica, collects the body and keeps the dead man company, guarding the secret she shares with him--something that happened in their grandmother's house in the winter of 1968. As Enright traces the line of betrayal and redemption through three generations, she shows how memories warp and secrets fester. The Gathering is a family epic, clarified through Anne Enright's unblinking eye. This is a novel about love and disappointment, about how fate is written in the body, not in the stars. The Gathering sends fresh blood through the Irish literary tradition, combining the lyricism of the old with the shock of the new. As in all of Anne Enright's work, this is a book of draing, wit, and insight, her distinctive intelligence twisting the world a fraction and giving it back to us in a new and unforgettable light.

Terrible. Fragmented literature.....boring characters...and we were given no liberty to know more about them but for the main character who is self-absorbed about her own trivial life. Hard to finish. Synopsis is fooling...won't ever recommend this author for any book club read! What a waste of paper and ink.

There was some clever writing; a few sentences that made you put the book down and savour the sentence just read, but overall not worth the time. Read the book because of the awards. Took effort to finish. I won't read anything else from this author.

I am so surprised that this award winning novel is far from the expectation I had for it. The protagonist is distant and withdrawn, her ambigious and slightly sarcastic attitude towards the family members that she was supposed to care about just doesn't help. The incongruence of her actions and thoughts makes it hard for readers to relate to her. Agree with other reviewers, I had to admit that the writing might be a bit boring.

    The Gathering 2

The Gathering is the fourth novel I have read written by Irish author Anne Enright. It won the 2007 Man Booker Prize. The novel involves the "inner journey" of the main character, the narrator, Veronica- and dives quickly from the present to the past and back again and takes place in England and Ireland. The title "The Gathering" refers to the narrator and her siblings gathering for the wake of their brother Liam. Liam is an alcoholic who committed suicide in the ocean. His mother and his… lisez le reste

Very difficult to get through. I found the writing stilted and sometimes difficult to follow. The characters were not empathetic whatsoever, so you never really cared what would happen in the end. Very disappointing.
