The goth Bible: A Compendium For The Darkly Inclined

by Nancy Kilpatrick

St. Martin's Press | October 4, 2004 | Trade Paperback

What you don''t know about goths could fill a book!

An artistic culture that revels in the Victorian romantic movement, The goth Bible brings to light the traditions and history of all that is goth. The goth culture has been one of the most controversial and maligned in media history. Presented as homicidal, suicidal and socio-pathic, in the national consciousness goths are coupled with everyone from Marilyn Mason to the murderers of Columbine. But this is not who the goths are. The goth Bible will help bridge the understanding between goths and non-goths.

From their historical origins as a Germanic tribe in the sixth century who fought along side the Romans against the Huns to their current incarnation as creatures of the night, The goth Bible presents the most complete and broad perspective of this society, culled from hundreds of interviews with bands, artist, designers, and goths from all walks of life.

    so disappointing

I bought this book expecting to read a survey of a really interesting subculture. Instead, I had to suffer through a whiny and rather annoying text about how rough Goths, who can’t be so horribly off if they can spend exuberant amounts on eccentric clothing, have it. Instead of educating the reader of the heritage behind the modern subculture, the author simply talked about what modern Goths like, dislike, like a bit, hate a lot. This became overwhelmingly boring and drawn on until I could no longer torture myself with the endless droning. In fact, if you would like to read the content of this tome without having to shell out 20 dollars, surf over to the first available gothic blog you find. I am sure it will be just as informative as this… and considerably more entertaining. This book was nothing more than an author’s attempt to make herself and her subculture seem like something of import. All it did accomplish was to make me realize that Goths are infact much whinier than I had previously thought.

    Beautiful Death

I bought this book not too long ago and i read through it. It helps non-goths or even goths understand about the culture. You get awesome websites at the end of each chapter to go and check things out yourself. By the time you're done with this book you'll find out what's true and what's not.

This book is good if you're doing research or if you just want to understand some things. This isn't for those who are afraid of goths or small minded or ignorant.
